That depends, again, upon the state. In N.C. for instance, you can automatically use deadly force when the intruder is breaking in, but NOT when he is already inside the house. The thought is that once the intruder is inside, you have the ability to determine whether he is armed and deadly force is appropriate or not. I think that is backwards thinking and believe that once he is inside, then it is definitely time for deadly force. Check local laws, as they may differ.
