Is this the right ammo?

My Dad gave me some ammo he THINKS goes with my Mauser, its some Norma 7x57 175grain soft point ammo, NO. 17004. Is this the right ammo for my Mauser or not?

It appears to use the 8mm Mauser ammo to me. I might be wrong, but I believe the Argentine Mausers used 7.92x57 ammo....

True, but NEVER use Argentine 8mm ammo. It goes boom about 25% of the time, if you are lucky. That day that I used it, I also brought some other rounds, and they worked fine in the rifle, wich means it was the ammo, not the rifle.

Pred, try also putting rounds in the gun, and, of course, have your finger OFF the trigger and cycle some rounds. You could even do that in your room, but makes sure your finger is OFF the trigger. Good luck with your rifle.

The 7.65 Argentine cartridge is called by several other names as well:
7.65 Mauser;
7.65x53 Mauser;
7.65 Belgian Mauser.
Originally designed for use in the Belgian 1889 Mauser rifle, many other countries adopted this cartridge in their military arms including:

Spain;
Turkey;
Bolivia;
Colombia;
Ecuador;
Paraguay; and
Peru.
Per Krause Publication's Cartridges of the World they state that the 7.65 Argentine Mauser is probably one of the better Mauser cartridges ever made when it comes to accuracy. The 7.65 Argentine cartridge is very similar in overall specifications and performance to the 7.62 NATO cartridge as the image and comparison table show below.

Cases can be formed from .30-06, .270 Winchester, 7mm Mauser, and 8mm Mauser brass cases and should be trimmed to be no longer than an overall length of 2.11 inches.

do not use 7mm ammo in this gun it is 7.65 argentine, you can find 7.65 argentine from jandg www.jgsales.com 185 grain fmj, I repeat use only 7.65, 54 bucks for 450 rounds. 8mm will not fit I dont even think you can chamber this round, and it will be very dangerous. edited i REPEAT DO NOT USE 8MM IN THIS RIFLE , ONLY 7.65 AMMO DESIGNED FOR THIS RIFLE

When in doubt, have a gunsmith check it out!

7mm Mauser is a very good caliber, and everyone I know who uses it loves it. Flat shooting and accurate.

The Brazilian '08 and '35 Mausers used it, and some modern sporters.

i gotta go with echoing everyone else.. really pay attention to what it is *ya done good coming here * i have a 1891 argentine mauser and it DEFINITELY takes a different size. better safe than sorry.. if not 100% positive its the right stuff, dont shoot it. same with non factory loads.. if someone else loaded it and you dont know how experienced they are/didnt see it happen yourself, dont shoot it. not worth chancing hurting yourself or your gun.
