Got my wood

i got my wood from TAPCO and while installing it i find that the screw that came with my synthetic buttstock stock isnt long enough to reach for the wooden buttstock....also when i installed the handguard it doesnt seem to quite fit on there just right...i have pics of it here

pics here

it seems to me like it isnt on there all the way but no matter how hard i push pull or otherwise try to move it it wont budge...there is only an on or off if that makes any sense...is the wood distorted? i really hope that my rifle isnt

any input would be great

Well I'm not a gunsmith or even terribly familiar with that particular longarm, but I am a professional woodworker and I would venture to say that the wood is off, not the gun.

The beauty of that is that unless it is too short in some dimension some sandpaper and judicious application of it will bring the fitment closer into alignment--even if it seems a little offset to oneside, by carefully reshaping the interior cavity and registration points, the alignment can still be improved--if needs be you could build up an unseen portion with epoxy to make up for any gaps against the fitting points of the interior areas.

Of course any exterior reworking will require refinishing, which is unfortunate, but if you are determined to make the part fit correctly it is just one of many steps toward that goal.

From your photos it appears to have a slight gap--shortness is the one thing a wood worker can't "fudge" as there are no "board-stretchers" that fit the TAPCO stock...however it could be that the let-in part of the stock is simply overlong which would be easy to remedy--it is impossible to tell without physically examining and guaging or measuring the parts that fit together.

Unfortunately it would be easier for me or another wood pro to do the job than describe it. Oftentimes what seems like an insurmountable problem of fitment is really just a half-finished job that some factory technician left to the installer so to speak...

I would have someone who is handy with guns and knows something about wood take a look before giving up hope.

I looked at the photos, and it is hard to tell...It really looks good on there and if it is secure and locked in place , should be ok ! I don't have a New screw to send you for the buttstock, but shouldn't be too hard to find!
Rich
I looked again and you got the front retainer pin in place between the barrel and the gas tube
so its on there!

looks good I am considering replacing the wood buttstock on mine with a G3 collapseable just kind of hard to justify a 140 for the stock.

there isnt actually a front retainer pin as it was described...there is just a hole for you to screw a screw all the was through to a point in the other side and it is partially blocked by the barrel...which was originally what lead to my further investigation of the problem...i think ill just take it to the next gun show and have our local "stock doc" take a look at it and see what he thinks...and if that doesnt work out i can send it back to TAPCO and try again

I went and pulled mine down and looked...There are 2 metal tabs inside that the screw goes thru and threads into to hold it on around the front of the barrel. I think I see the problem, it is the little tab sticking out of the gas block and it won't let the front go up so that the retaining screw clears the barrel, your front metal piece doesn't have the notch cut out to allow it to seat...it needs to be notched to fit ! Check that FIRST !
The ONLY other place I could see where you might get some Interference is where the wood contacts the Gas tube as it is being pushed up into place. Take a Dollar bill and place it between the barrel and gas tube and push the handguard up and see if you can slide the bill the length, if it binds then a small amount of wood needs to be sanded out where it contacts the gas tube.Tip... use a long socket or 3'' piece of tubing the same size as the gas tube, and wrap sandpaper around that and sand lengthwise down the channel
to fit it...Sand a little, check the fit, repeat until you can insert the retaining screw and the front metal piece is up against the bottom of the barrel.

well an hour and several dremel bits later i have taken your advice moose and ground out a notch on that front piece of metal...fits nice and tight...now i just have to find a longer screw for my buttstock and a screw to keep that foregrip on even though it doesnt really need one

Hooray ! You do need a screw to retain the handguard or it may jump off under recoil. you might try Egunparts(Numrich) and see if those are listed on the website.
