Any good info on a Yugo M48?

Hey all, I just bought my first Mauser. It's a Yugo M48 ( not A or B or BO, just a straight up 48 ) and I was just curious if I got a good deal on it for $100. I took it to the range the other day and it shot very nice groups at 50 and 100 yds. The handguard has a hairline crack behind the rear site, but other than that the wood is very intact... ( but still saturated in cosmo of course! )
Couple of questions though. Are the M48's more rare than the other Yugo variants? Also, how does the accuracy usually compare to it's German cousin?

The M48 is currently wholesaling for 119.95 + 10 bucks more for hand select,
Not really rare but supplies are dwindling...You got a deal at 100 bucks !

Thumbs up

One advantage of the M48 is it's all forged parts. The M48A has some stamped parts to ease production costs. Both are good rifles.
You got a good price.

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't referring to the M48 as being rare, I was more curious of how the M48's production numbers compared to the M48A and M48B etc etc..
Great shooting lil rifle it is! I came across some Russian surplus ammo from '72 that it seems to like alot. It shot pretty well with some Turkish '43 ammo, but overall the groups were alot tighter with the Russian stuff. The blast makes it quite fun to take to the range. I swear I made the guy next to me jump when I let out the first shot.

Your Yugo is a good rifle. They are as accurate as their big brother, the K98 The Yugo was made with tooling that came originally from Germany, but the action is about a 1/4" shorter than the K98. They are large ring mausers, but to my knowledge they have not been used much for custom rifles. The 8mm cartridge fits well, but I doubt a 30-06 or a 300WM would fit in the smaller action. I have a 48 and a 48A and the other gentleman was correct about the stamped parts on the 48A.
If you use military surplus ammunition, consider all of it corrosive. The primers are the culprit. After you fire the ammo, clean the barrel and the face of the bolt with 50 50 household ammonia and water, or use ammonia Windex. Put the solution on a patch and run it through the barrel, wetting it good. After about a minute, clean the rifle as normal with a good solvent. Don't forget the bolt face. I wish you hours of enjoyment firing your Mauser. Warning, they are addictive. You need to check out a Persian before they are gone.

I put my M48 in a Boyd's stock and it's a good looking rifle. They finished the 48's very well, so they look nice out of the military stock.
The M48 isn't rare by any standard and it makes an excellent candidate for custom work since it really has no history to ruin, or collectablility to spoil.
As to the action fitting 30/06 or longer cartridges, I couldn't say. But it would be an excellent choice for many other rounds. Restocking mine is all I've done so far. It shoots any 8mm very accurately.
Not as much fun as my Mosins (strictly opinion) and a little more expensive to shoot if you want non-corrosive ammo.
Not sure If I'm gonna keep it. I may give it to a friend whose wife doesn't let him buy any guns. It'll give him a bolt gun to toy with and something to feed his family if Armageddon comes hither.
