permit/yes/no/what cost?

FMJ had a good idea about permits.

In NY each county has its own regulations but the carry permit is good in all countys but NYcity and Albany (they require thier own on top of the state issue)
we can and are encouraged to carry concieled (panzys don't want to see it, makes em nervouse)
step one: firearms safety class or a DD214 w/pistol qualification ($30.00)
step two: three page application w/three referances ($5.00)
step three:finger prints ($10.00)
step four: Photos ($10.00)
step five: postal money order for ($90.00) for the fed. background check
step six: wait 6 weeks to 6 months for a deputy sherif to get his fat donut eating !!! to call your three referances and make notes.
step seven: wait for the under sherif to look it all over and decide if it should go to the judge or not.
step eight: wait for the judge to get around to looking it over and decide if he wants to talk to you before he denies it or aproves it.
step nine: if aproved you get a letter to come pick it up ($10.00)
if denied you loose all your $$ and they may or may not tell you why. could have been as simple as a wrong date on a speeding ticket or a rock through a window when you where 12.
ok, now say you have it (NY is not a shall issue state)
once you have it you can now buy a handgun: you buy it at the FFL dealer, he gives you a reciept. you take it back to where you got your permit and they type the make model and ser num. on it. (this is done for every handgun you have/buy/carry) if its not on your permit you can't be in posetion of it.
ok now that its on your permit you take the little green tag the clerk gave you back to the dealer and he then checks to make sure that it is correctly on your permit. then and only then can you take posetion of the handgun.
this whole little song and dance can cost as much as $3.00 per handgun all the way up to $30.00 per handgun going on and off the permit (yes they hit you coming and going) the cost is dependant on the county you have it in.
some counties require you to re-apply if you move into them with an out-of-county permit and they require you to surrender your handguns until you pass the second issue of your permit in thier county.

Now comes the fun part, internet and out of state sales of handguns have to be run through a NY FFL dealer. this is also a $$ and varies. they are trying to make it so that even iner-state sales from private owner to private owner go through a dealer now as well. and yes Both parties have to be standing in front of the clerk when a transfer from one owner to the other takes place on the permit. only after this is done and both have signed off that they haven't been arrested or convicted in another state or area for anything since the permit was issued can the phsyical transfer of the handgun take place.
the law is writen so strickly that allowing another permit holder to fire your handgun at a designated range is against the law because he or she is in posetion of handgun not registered to them. and you knowingly allowed this to take place.

Ok enough of my misspellings and complaining, i'm sure i have forgoten some of the restrictions and maybe a step or two in gaining the permit. there are so many to remember. now its your turn.

oh, BTW my PA permit was a one page application took 14 days and cost me a total of $21.00, NY doen't issue out of state permits.

Class here runs anywhere from $80 to $150. Then the permit application and fingerprinting, background check runs $90. If you don't pass the approval, you don't get a refund. Permit valid for only 5 years, then another $90.

Man I love Iowa now, it'll cost me $20 total to get my permit ($10 for the licence, $10 for the range fee). And $10 to renew it each year

Troylaplante nailed it on its head. $120 pass or fail the class; then another $90 for a pass/fail check.

Its all gravy though when it compared to NY.

$20 for application, same for renewal, and it's good for several years at a time. I think it's 5, because I had to replace mine in '04 due to losing it in a flood. (Thankfully it wasn't my house that got flooded... just me.)
