SAD situation

I have a few M1A rifles sittin around here and I love them, they are my "go to" gun, make no mistake I love my AR's but they are... well, different, they cant reach out and touch someone quite the same way my 308's can. I am a bit disappointed to see no ongoing conversations regarding the M1A rifle. At any rate I just wanted some one to know that I love this rifle, and I am looking for a place to shoot one out to 1k, so if any one knows a place here in\around Houston TX please let me know.

Red face

I'm a .308 lover too, though I don't have an M1 or M1A yet. Finding any place to shoot more than 100 yards is getting tough!

You ever find yourself in Middle Tennessee, Big Dog, you look me up. I'll hook you up with a 300 meter range for the rifles and a 50 meter range for your handguns. I generally make a day out of shooting, take the bar-b-q and spend a day out at the range with the family. Place belongs to a personal friend of mine so I don't begrudge the exorbitant price of $5/day.

Barrett uses this range as an unofficial non-laboratory conditions test range, but they let us know in advance because they hog the range when they come out. But even then it's fun to watch them shoot the .50s.

I love .308. But the price tag on an M1a is unreasonable to me for what you're getting.
I just ordered a Saiga .308 with the 21" barrel because it's more reliable, requires far less maintenence and is 1000 dollars less.

I'm going to join a club here in Tulsa that has a 1K yd range. On a paper I got from the club booth at the gun show yesterday, it said it has one of the few 1k yd range in the US. To bad you didn't live closer.

Well now I feel a bit better and a bit worse…kind of a wash huh? We have a 600 yd range here in Houston, but I can find nothing past that, so I feel better than some, but not as good as those of you who actually have 1k to shoot at.

By the way Outrider…how does it group, if it has come it yet? It is always a great pleasure to me when a new acquisition shoots better than I had hoped.

600 yard and a few dreams are as close as I can get to a 1k range currently…but if I find one close you can bet I’ll be singing its praises for all of you to see.

Haven't got it yet. My shop said he was getting them in this week so I locked one up. Never know when the Saigas will dry up again.

I hope that once you get it you will post the results of your first outing, I’m interested to see how you like it.

I took my Dad out to shoot my M1A last week. His first time my my trusty Scout. He liked it. I would like to say that he loved it, but I think he would like a NM in a tiger stiped birch better. Hey no one's perfect...

Jeez I guess it is time to save up for an LRB National Match... I hope Fred has some more tiger-striped birch left.

So, gonzo454... You have few M1As? All same make? Tell us about the nuances of each. Feel free to satrt a new thread. Let us breathe some life into this corner of the Gun and Game...

This place is about 20 minutes from my house, if they don't have a range long enough, you need to get out of the abrams and settle with a 50 cal.

I gotta warn you that the 8-rd .308 Saiga mags are about 35+ bucks each, when you can find them at all, which isn't often. Kinda like the printers that sell really cheaply, then the new ink cartridges cost half the price of the printer. :insane:

Mr

The first time I handled an m-14 was in '67 at Fort Dix N.J. and that was the only good memory that I ever had of the place. Mine was made by the Singer Sewing Machine Company (honest to God) and could it reach out once I got used to it!!

I keep trying to rationalize in my head spending the money that they ask for the M1A and I just can't do it. To my mind, they ask for those prices for only one reason. They know they can get it.

I guess the closest I'll ever get to one is with my little bitty mini 14. Really nice gun but it's like comparing a chihuahua to a Bull Mastiff.
