Raising markings?

New to the forum and would appreciate some advice/info:

I have a Mauser (of indeterminate origin) that my dad got for me by mail order in the early to mid-1960s. It appears to me that most of the original markings have been polished off the top of the receiver. All that's left is the inscription of what appears to be a small point-down dagger, the words "Cal. 7.92", followed by what I assume are two proof marks - a small "p" inside a box and a small "r" inside a box, All that is on the left side of the receiver just above the stock. There is also a faint marking low on the right side of the receiver and on the right side of the forward band holding the barrel, both of which may be the remains of another dagger-like shape. There is also a serial number - 1405 - on both the receiver and the (straight) bolt arm.

Is there any way an amateur can attempt to raise the remains of any markings off the top of the receiver?

And any idea where this gun likely came from? It's a reasonably good shooter in very good condition.

If the rifle hasn't been altered or cutdown ("Bubba'd"), a pic or three would really help us ID it. I'll check my Mauser book tonight when I get home, to see if those 'dagger' markings applys to any nation.
Seeing the stock, bands, bolt handle, etc. would be great.

does it resemble a german k98 maybe? it might be a reworked rifle from WW2, but that's just my assumption.
