Looking for a gundog or just the best pet ? Look no further than the Springer Spaniel

Well, my brother was the first one to buy a Springer for his family as a pet (for his 3 boys), partner, gundog for his pheasant and duck mounts to be and once in a while he would belt Oscar into the front seat of his Ford Explorer in hopes the State Patrol would just glance long enough to accept him as a hairy uncle Fred when speeding down I-5 in the diamond lane. Perhaps it was the blaze orange hunting cap and glasses that made the disguise all the more effective. This was all just way too cool, so I had to have atleast one. Right ? After all, I needed a pet...(for my 7 sons). Good partners are hard to come by and yes I do hunt, mostly elk and deer though. So I went out to the same breeder my brother used and made the mistake of taking my wife and 2 of my sons along for the ride. Remember Lay's potato chips ? "Betcha can't eat just one ?" Umm, right! My wife looked up at me with all the little puppies crawling all over her and said, .H.O.N.E.Y.???? We took two of the critters, brothers at that. It kind of had a nice ring to it.Well BOB & MIKE became official members of our family. The following months and years were exciting and challenging to be sure. We studied up on the breed and we truly became students of the Springer Spaniel. We learned the ins and outs of their characteristics. We became aware of the fact they have relatively short attention spans except when it comes time to hunt or retrieve or swim. When it was time for them to do something they had been trained to do they could be just like little kids. It turned out to be challenging to have 2 brothers from the same litter. Sometimes when it was time to work or train BOB & MIKE just wanted the car keys and would have been off to the mall if we would have given them half a chance.

That was all years ago, many hunting and camping trips have come and gone now. Our oldest son is married and living in SoCal. Another is in the Navy stationed in Italy, one just graduated H.S. this past June and our baby (#7) is a senior in H.S. All but one seem to be sprinkled over the West Coast between California and Washington State. What about BOB & MIKE you ask ? Well BOB is Senior Production Mgr. at Microsoft and the stock WHEW...No really, both BOB & Mike have taken up their rightful place in front of the fire. They are truly members of the family and as for my slippers and the newspaper, they kindly ask me to get them for myself....Well I guess they've earned that much.
