Long range setup?

Hey,

Thanks for all the help on my orginal post! I ended up getting one of a friend with GI internals and a Chrome linned barrrel i was wondering about now upgrading it for long range shooting what would be some good upgrades without paying to much?

The M14 is a fine weapon, capable of reaching out and touching someone, with the stock sights and some practice you should have no problems out to five hundred meters. Beyond that you may want to get the scope mount that fits the left side of the receiver and a good quality scope.
I once heard a Marine Sergeant Major say, "If you can see it you can hit it with the M14!" I think that's a bit much, but I'll agree it's a fine weapon. Just don't make the mistake of buying a scope that won't support the rifle. Many people don't spend enough on the scope. I bought a 4X16X56 Mildot Millet for my Savage, now I wish I had spent more on a better fixed ten power scope like the professional snipers use.

It depends on how much you want to spend. I use a Springfield Armory M1A Loaded-MA9827, w/Extended Cluster Rail, Black Fiberglass Stock, National Match, 22" Stainless Steel Barrel and a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50 illuminated mil dot scope. Not cheap but very accurate at 200 yards, and I'm no expert shooter. Have not shot past 200 yards yet as there is nowhere down here I have found to do so. I'm sure there are setups that cost a lot less and will shoot as well, depending on the shooter, but I got caught up in a "Springfield Armory Craze" and shot my wad! Don't get me wrong, it's a great setup, but if you research, there are some really good deals out there.

Without paying to much?

... The least exspensive would be tried and true National Match modifications. NM sights, NM tuned trigger, NM unitized gas cylinder, NM op rod guide (Sadlak), NM reamed flash suppressor and NM bedding in Birch or Walnut.
If you plan to $hoot with optic$ I suggest you put it in a $AGE M14ALC$ with your NM tuned trigger, NM op rod guide (Sadlak) and an SEI GLFS / DC Vortex combo.
Don't go cheap on the glass or the mount and rings.

Rather than the Sage, I'd choose the JAE-100. With it's clever mounting system bedding will not be needed. I can't picture another stock being any more solid than this one.

For anyone who isn't familiar with this stock, scroll down to see the details of how it mounts the receiver. Very well thought out. It isn't cheap, but it's bound to improve accuracy.

wow thanks for all the helpI love that stock but dont think i'll ever be able to afford it but i didnt see a price! I've gotten pretty good with my M14 Me and a friend were shooting last weekend and i was able to hit a 20ga shell from about 75 yards with open sights. I realy like my M14 but i might get a remington 700 in .300 or .338 and make it into a nice long range shooter. I also have another question! I was told by a friend That scopes were ordered something like this for top three and if you would like you can also expand!
1.Leapold
2.Weaver
3.Simmons
and can you also get a good bipod for cheap? I have GI internals that were on it when i bought it and it is a great shoother but i have prolly neveer shot it more than a hundred yards. But it shoots realy good at short ranges! Thanks again for all you help.

Take a look at the tri-rail USGI synthetic stock that Smith Enterprise, Inc. uses on the M14SE Crazy HorseÂ®.

Lowest cost, easy bipod mount and no bedding. These rifles reach out - way out.

I would not list these scopes as the top three. While the Leapold is a top scope (If you get the top of the line) I personally prefer the NightForce NXS. It is so clear, and gathers light extreamely well. You can also choose from the IOR, Ziess, etc.

There are a lot of people who actually have very accurate rifles but put cheep scopes on them and the grouping sucks and they blame the rifle. Lets put it this way. Would you buy a Corvette and put the cheep Firestone special tires (4 for $150) on the car? No because you would never get the performance the car can deliver. This is the same with the rifle.

I have a Remington Sendero Special (syn HR stock, bull barrell) in .270 that shoots one hole 5-round groups with such consistancy it is scarry - with my NightForce NXS 3.5 - 15 X 56 scope. When I had it topped with a Simmons my best group was 2.0 to 2.5 inches with most averaging in the 2.5 range. These groups were at 100 yards.

The best scope mount I have seen for the M14 type rifle is the new MCS stock from TROY.

For some "inexpensive" improvements to the M1A I changed stocks to the Fiberglass Milsurp from Freds( in shotgun News), I bought the Military bipod that clamps around the Gas Block, I added the Springfield Side mount with a Springfield 2nd Gen Military Scope with built in level, and Most important was,
I got my hands on the M852 Long range sniper AMMO ! It will shoot within 10 inches at 1000 yards as they are loaded for Accuracy.( 174 grain boattail HP Sierra matchking Bullets loaded by Lake City Arsenal ). The M110 ammo is just as good !

I paid 300 bucks for the Springfield scope and mount...It is 4x-14x X 56mm, with a NICE rangefinder Reticle, and built in bubble level.(Used)
The action fits tighter in the Fiberglass stock than it does in the wood stock by the way and that alone tightened the groups by almost 1/2 inch !

This new Navy CQB stock from SAGE is the tightest stock I have ever worked with.
The barrel is semi floated from the the op rod guide block forward and the action is tension bedded.

Accuracy is awesome.
Pull the forward grip, mount a scope, add a bipod, install a 22" action and you can go long range with ease.
The Magpul CRT has 3 different size snap-on cheek risers and the LOP is ajustable.

honestly I think a Burris XTR 6X–24X–50mm Non-Illuminated would be perfect for the M1A for long range but I have no idea what mount to put it on lol I dont have an M1A this is just my opinion.
