| Senior Member | Mason Mountain TPWD Bow Hunt Myself and fireman friend from Farmers Branch Tx were drawn for the Deer Only Archery Hunt at Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Hunt cost $125 for a 4-day hunt. October 24-27. Mason Mountain is known for it's exotic animals. Could only shoot deer, 2 deer. Saw more exotics than deer. Thompson's Gazelles running around in the pastures. Water Bucks, Sables and Axis deer wondering around. This was not a canned hunt. It was a cold contact hunt if yaknow what i mean. Drew numbers for compartments. 750 acres for my two man hunt party. Drove compartment with buddy John and split our hunt areas. Then went in and started looking for tracks, rubs, scrapes, droppings, trails, nibbled vegetation and etc. I had a good teacher a few years ago, S. Gyer. He showed me little things to look for. picked 3 ambush spots. Made two ground blinds and set tree stand in one tree. A tough hunt for sure. No Buck signs. Hunted the transition points between feeding areas and bedding areas. Each location was or could have been productive, if I had a rifle. Wind blew my scent across trail twice. One of those times I moved and spooked three does. Dang Ken! You forgot! Nothing in the wild WALKS on two legs! Stay low next time you move!Picked one trail but when deer came through, they where another 20 yards out. NOt comfortable shooting 40 - 45 yards. Later took test shot. Ahhh! 10' short. No deer. A lot of fun and learned a couple things. This is the 5th time bow hunting in 4 years. I'm jazzed! Can't wait till the next time.![]()
