FEGs and CZ52s

I have both the FEG Pa63 9x18 and the CZ52 7.62x25. They are very interesting and very representative of early E Euro semiauto pistol design. However I dont consider them target plinkers or defensive guns because they arent as safe as modern pistols imho. The CZ safety is too easy to turn on and the FEGs is too hard to turn off. Both have to have the mag removed to close the slide. They both eject brass about 35 to 40 feet. I sorta feel lucky to have the opportunity to fire these powerful pistols at the range but modern pistols are so easy and safe to handle that I dont feel as comfortable about safety issues with the older pistols. I like to own the older pistols because of their eccentric personality and design but for that very reason I dont consider them everyday guns. Im not saying they dont function though. Trust me when I say they can flat out put alot of rounds down range. Nothing made in 1952 can compare to a new Glock but when you shoot a Pa or a CZ it's like being momentarily overwhelmed by mechanical history.

I have now got the kinks out of both the FEG9x18 and the CZ52 by replacing the recoil springs on both. This eliminates 40ft brass ejection salvos and delivers a smooth recoil pleasing to the hands. Also I've shortened the trigger springs on both models to lighten trigger pull significantly. Recoil springs aren't free but shortening trigger spring doesn't cost a dime and anybody can do it. Don't cut too much because you will experience fail to fire. Cut increments of approx 1/10" till you get what you want.

Thanks for the info Zen. I too own both of these pistols and they are among my favorite that I have ever owned. Between the two I don't see how they would be completely unsafe to carry though. The Cz52 has a drop safety that holds the firing pin in place until the trigger pull lifts the lever and depresses the bolt that then releases the firing pin. I don't trust the decocker on it, which is why I manually lower the hammer when I decock it. I don't see the Pa63 being much of a safety issue either because of the huge firing pin block that the safety provides, and also because the hammer has to be cocked to raise the back of the firing high enough for the hammer to be able to reach it. The firing pin also has a spring in front of it that provides another means of safety, and the firing pin also cannot go forward while it is in the lowered position. I do agree that not having an external slide release can be annoying at times, but there is a nice trick you can do with the Cz52 to get around this. See the big bar of metal on the left side of your Cz that is just in front of the grip? You can push up on it with your thumb and lock the slide back just like you would with a more modern pistol. The safety on my Pa63 is quite easy to manipulate in either direction with one hand, I guess it's a luck of the draw thing.

Not sure where you intended this post to go, but here is my 2 cents. First, I cant speak to the PA 63 as I don't own one. However, I do own a CZ-52 and several Glocks. I would and have carryed the CZ for protection. I actually think it is an inherently safer pistol than the Glock. That said, I do carry one of the Glocks 99% of the time primarily to to the size and weight of the CZ - my choice not to carry it though has nothing to do with safety. By the way, my CZ is more accurate than any of the three Glocks I own.

CZ's and Glocks are both great guns. I agree with you that the CZ is primarily a fun gun, but disagree that it is not as safe as modern pistols. It was actually way ahead of it's time.

Well I didn't expect it to go towards a Glock comparison. That's very interesting. I haven't shot my 52 enough to know it's accuracy and full personality because I only yesterday got new springs and didn't want to damage the slide by firing too many rounds with mushy springs. As far as safety here is an example: my thumb was activating the safety accidentally which could make the gun useless in an emergency defense situation. Secondly: (imo) the bullet is too powerful for self defense. It penetrates Kevlar which means you could hit the attacker but the bullet keeps going to God only knows where even after striking the bad guy. The CZ is sort of a supergun. It's like a moped with 150hp. A ccw gun shouldn't have that type of penetration or even close to it. The CZ52 has unique qualities. I look forward to getting to plink with it and learn about it.
