| Modern equipment/tactics I see all the new equipment and the way assaults are deployed and wonder how combat effective it really is.In my day we were allowed to use anything available including wearing flac jackets and carrying any weapon including FAL,s H&K,s and M60,s.As far as I know this was only in SO.Our basic assault was to deploy and spread out so everyone could lay down suppressive fire if fired on.Our basic weapon was the M16 with up to 600rds of ammo and Browning Hi power hand gun backed up with M79 grenade launchers or 2.6 bazookas.Seldom did anyone use a flak jacket as they only stopped shrapnel at longer distances and didnt stop bullets at all. What I wonder about is how efective all the things I see military and police are using and how effective is it when they are all lined up making it difficult to furnish supressive fire.Ialso wonder how fast the sights and everything can be used.To me assault means being lean and mean.Especially in police work I cant ubderstand carrying all sorts of equipment and a sidearm with all kinds of lights to expose you to the shooter on the other side.I hope you personell with experience and training with what looks like very bulky equipment can give some views on how well it works. samuel. |

| Gun Liker ![]() | Samuel, I think I know where you are coming from. I saw a picture once of a group of US Marshalls, but it could have been a SWAT team, Special Operations group or what ever, but it struck me as a group chaps who spent quality time in the dress up box. I have no experience in a combat situation, at all, but I think I would possibley follow your example. As I have spent time out in the field, walking up the south side of mountains and covering distance hunting, which I love to do, and I`ve suffered the consequences of over an over zealous packing frenzy. I mean at the end of the day, if all the gear helps these guys get the job done, whether it be for practical reasons, like knee pads or just for a prop to get them into a mind set, who am I to argue. |
