...to find a NIB Sig Sauer P226 Elite like this for $500 or less?

I realize it's wishful thinking, but should I expect these prices to go down? Reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking this may make a great first carry gun. It has the beavertail grip like the 1911, which fits my hand the best of any gun, but I like the DA/SA with decocker of the Sig, plus want to go with a .40S&W, due to flinching before the shot from the recoil of a .45ACP. Don't think lots of practice will fix this... I shoot my Mosin Nagant 91/30 with sub-1" groups at 25 yards; no big feat, but I have no problem with flinching with the 7.62x54R round. Also, I've shot my friend's .357 magnum 2" snub-nosed revolver and my wrist hurt for a week. That is NOT something I want to deal with.

The reason I want to find one at $300-500 is that I'm a University student that's had his carry permit for years now, but haven't had the cash to spend on a quality gun like a Sig. Also, I don't want to get a "like new" or "used" gun, since this will be for regular carry and, the good Lord forbid, potentially life-saving situations.

The recoil from a .40 and a .45 are very close.
You might be better off with a 9MM.
And good luck with the search new Sig's are a little pricey.

Funny you should say that, since I went to my local range and rented multiple guns in both calibers and was able to shoot the .40 much better than the .45, due to the lower recoil. I tried Glocks, Sigs, SA, HK, and others in both calibers. Admittedly, I shot best with the Glock 27 with the grip extension, but not having the full grip felt weird.

The best "feel" of any gun I've held has been a Kimber Custom that a guy let me shoot 5 rounds through. Even though it was a .45, it was very smooth and very controllable. I'd get a Kimber Pro Carry CDP, but I don't have that kind of cash to throw around, plus, I'd actually prefer to go with .40 and they don't make it in that caliber.

*sigh* So, I return to this thread to forlornly report what I've found on the net. MSRP for the gun is reported to be $1000-$1200. Someone on SigForum.com mentioned that the dealer cost is about $800 (she/he said 'that's a good deal, only $25 over dealer cost' and the gun offered was $825). So, it appears that a NIB 226 Elite .40 for $500 or less is an impossiblity.

Excuse me while I go frown at my bank account and possibly go fondle my CETME and 91/30.

Can anyone with an FFL and perhaps access to dealer pricing confirm that the wholesale price on a Sig Sauer P226 Elite is $800? I've seen it posted elsewhere, but they didn't say whether or not they knew this for a fact.

Be careful with the compact 1911 45s they can be un reliable, not enough slide weight.

Um, I specifically said in my main post that I want the .40S&W model. Plus, the Sig P226 doesn't come in .45, that's the P220, it only comes in 9x19mm, .357SIG and .40S&W. Also, I only mentioned the 1911 for reference to the beavertail grip and the fact that the frame/grip is the most comfortable and easiest to get on target that I've ever had.

I got a P229 in .357 sig from my local guy for $784. And I ordered the 40 cal barrel for $140 more.

But it seems to me my Ruger KP944DC in 40 S&W did kick just about the same as my SA 1911A1 GI in .45.

JAC, have you looked at the SIG Certified trade-ins? These are police trade-ins that are fully reconditioned by SIG and come with the full warranty intact. Bachman Pawn & Gun in Dallas, Tx has them for $499.99 in 9mm, 40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Of course, you'd have shipping and transfer fees, but it's better than $800. They don't have a website but they advertise in Shotgun News regularly. Their ph. nmbr is :214-351-0572 if you're interested.
