I handled an XD-45, and was unimpressed by how immensely hard it was to rack the slide. I handled a 40 cal Browning Hi-Power and it felt the same way.

My conclusion is that while safe to fire, some of the bigger stretches of pistols designed for smaller rounds being chambered for larger ones are a bit difficult to use. There are more important things than size, or in this case, height and length. (The 1911 is tall and long but quite thin.)

So if I were to consider an XD, I'd go with a 40 or 9mm. I believe the XD was designed with the 40 in mind, vs Glock which was designed for the 9 and upped to 40. For 45 ACP I'd go with a 1911 or USP.
