Huntin' Types

There I two guys I work with who hunt. Bill is 55y.o., always learning, has so many heads and horns laying around you'd swear he was a taxidermist. He's been hunting since birth, probably, knows 'the old ways'. As I say, he's always learning, every day he goes out. The dude is an absolute pleasure to hunt with. !!!!, I almost shot him twice on the same day, and he maintains a positive welcoming attitude. I would class him as my huntin buddy. He's really took me under his wing and will always appreciate the help he gives me. the guy is a star.

The second guy is 26y.o. He knows it ALL. He was telling Bill something the other day, and it was almost disrespectful, the tone he was using. I mean, Bill may say he's still learning, but I don't think there's a lot he doesn't know. I'm not saying young people know nothing and old people know it all (Bill would be the first to admit he doesn't). Of course, me being new to the hunting deal, I know NOTHING compared to the guy, and am always being told what to do. I hunted with him once. He was having an 'off' day.

Please expel two myths (you can read about the third 'fact' he told me on the 'Glock' page/forum.)

1: You're supposed to wear different Camo's. Say, a Mossy Oak Breakup jacket, a Realtree Hardwoods Hat, and Fusion 3-D Pants. It makes you blend in better. I wondered out loud if Cabela's and every hunting show have got it wrong. I'm informed that they have.

2: I think i saw this once on Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He told me that whilst Bow-hunting, he was having a hard time getting a good shot on a buck. It kept disappearing behind a tree. He could see the arse of the deer and the head, on either side of the blocking tree. So he bent the fletchings (or maybe even the arrow itself) and made his shot, shooting around the tree. Obviously the deer never even ran, don't be silly.

Say it ain't so, joe...

As Jerry Clower would say, I've a suspicion this kid would climb a tree just to tell a lie, when he could stay on the ground to tell the honest truth.

And does anyone else have any magical hunting stories?

1. It doesn't matter what you wear, as long as you break up the outline of your body
2. That is BS

#1. Different camo. For sure. (to the human eye. doesn't matter what you wear, but the deer always see ya.)
#2. Curved shots only with a cue ball.

Deer, like most game, see movement more than anything else. I've shot deer at 50 yards wearing a Hawiian shirt and flip flops. Just try to break up your outline and you'll be fine.

Every serious bow hunter knows you have to attach small weights to one of the fletchings to make it curve. That and fairy dust.

For the love of all thats Holy, dont go into the woods with that guy!

They are BS as far as I am concerned. I have had deer play stare down with me while I was wearing blaze orange, let alone camoflauge. A deer will pick up movement better than anything. And I think you would have a heck of a time "bending" fletching, it would simply break.

I'm no expert on physics, but it seems to me if you were to cause a reaction in the arrow by bending the fletching it would only cause the arrow to keyhole. You need to come up with some practical jokes to play on this clown.

that's what i thought about the curve, cos as the arrow spins, assuming the fletch'bending trick worked, it would curve, but in a constantly different direction.

killing deer in flip-flops. wow. that sounds like the life!

maybe you can help me out on the huntin practical jokes.

p.s. total rain-out at the range for my .22 experimenting. more to come on that.

Tell him that bending the trailing tips of his broadheads approx. 15 deg. in a counter-clock-wise direction will help to "stabilize" them. In the meantime, stay the he ll away from him! BTW, the next time I'm home, I am going to try an experiment in which I will sit 100 yds from my feeder in plain sight dressed in my normal street clothes(jeans and t-shirt) I want to see if they will approach as usual or hide. The feeder sits in an open field so the deer have to jump a fence to get to it. Should be interesting.

Awesome! Thanks for the 'tip'. I'll tell him that, and that the guys i chat to in texas are killing deer so easily with their 'stabilized' broadheads that the government's gonna be halving the cull limit this year. he'll freak out.

as I said, Im a total noob, especially at Bow-hunting. This will send his arrows into 'where did that go' mode, right? Not to mention generally messing up his broadheads?

he is crazy enough to try it.

Is it just me? I cant find this thread under any hunting sub-headings. The only time I see it is when it comes up under the main hunting forum with the most recent post. Hmmmmm.

When we take newbies to recon a new hunting area I'll bring M&M's or raisins along, drop them inconspicuousley, bring them to the newbies attention, eat several, then announce size, sex, and age of the deer they came out of. They cant believe it. But I wouldnt go into the field with that guy. Tell him to take a whores bath in Pine-Sol before hunting to kill the human scent. See if he bites.

Tool: sit really still and down wind, but have a bush or something behind you to break up your outline. They'll come!
