I wouldn't use it on a coyote hunt either you would be handicapped to under a 100 yards.If the opportunity arises and all you had was the 17hmr while squirrel hunting would you take the shot?

The HMR is overkill if you're squirrel hunting. The M2 is actually a bit much for squirrels also. The 22LR is the perfect squirrel round.

the HMR is a little hot for squirrel, unless you shoot them with a fmj. It works fine then.

High to all. Im new on this site

I have been shooting a HMR since they first came out,and will be the first to attest to its killing power. As will the thousands of rabbits and hundreds of hogs that have fallen victim to my marlin 917. What i have to offer to this debate is that in my experience with the 17 HMR there are more than a few times that I completley did not touch the hog I was shooting at because of a few blades of grass. Which prompted me to switch to my 17 ackley hornet for some of those larger eastern hogs. I realize that its all about bullet placement,and I have always tried to do more with less cartridge.Hence the name microgun,but shooting a 17-20 grn bullet at a 40 lb. animal is just asking to feel the rejection of a failed attempt on game. Its not only unfair to you its unethical. I pride myself on the one shot theory but you have to know when to cry uncle.If you like the small caliber rifles try the 17 or the 20 squirrel. Its only 2/3 the lenght of the HMR but has the guts to throw a 20 grn V-Max at 3000 FPS and you can reload so it doesnt cost 12.00 a box.

Did anyone notice that Zumbo was hunting with the people at Remington trying the .17 on coyotes? That was his first mistake of the day.

It was probably the .17 remington. Either way, a .17 just gets blown around a little too much, no matter what the MV is. 22 caliber and up is the way to go, at least to me.

im not nice to yotes but i like to take them out in a flash so i use something a little big a marlin lever action .35 rem

Heavy brush I break out the 12 gauge. 3.5 inch No, 4 buck works great, and is a lot cheaper than that dead coyote stuff.

I don't own an hmr but i know a guy who is 72 and still hunts and has been hunting since he was 10 and he shoots coyotes with his hmr all the time but limits his shots to 100 yards. For extended work he uses a 6mm remington.

If you want to read about this topic, go to rimfirecentral and search for the word 'coyote'. You will get probably dozens of threads about this very topic.

I think the bottom line is, will it work? Probably. Will it work great? Probably not. Some people will shoot a coyote with a .22 short, if they think it will eventually die. They do this because of their own beliefs or reasons. If a coyote had killed one of your small dogs and came back the next night for the other, wouldn't you shoot it with anything you had handy? Some people just hate them.

I have a .17 and love it. I shoot the crap out of squirrels with it, and I don't see it as overpowered because I just want to kill the things. But I wouldn't use it for a coyote hunt.

I use my HMR17 for deer hunting. I hunt from a stand and no dogs. I shoot them at 100yds or less in the head only, they drop like a rock. No damaged meat, no looking for the deer, he is right where he was when I shot him. Would never attempt a body shot with 17, like you all say definetly to small for that kind of shot.

That seems pretty risky to me. Illeagle preety much everywhere. At 100 yards is it really that good to be trying to make a head shot with a 17? These guys dont even want to take a yote with it let alone a deer! I like my 17 and would definetly take a yote with it. Use the expanding bullets instead of the fmjs. Cant remember what there called but there from hornady. The other bullets are varmit bullets. They shold b used on varmts not on yotes.

I have a 17 HMR and I use it on Groundhogs, and I would NOT use the 17 HMR on anything bigger, I shot a Groundhog, lasered at 183 Yds and I used the
Hornady 20 Grn XTP's, and I LOVE the 20 Grn XTP Bullets
So IF I HAD to use the 17 HMR for a coyote, it would be the 20 Grn XTP Bullets
But with that being said, I, Myself would NEVER use the 17 HMR to take a Coyote!

I dont see why you thin k its not capable of taking a yote. At ranges under 100 yards i dont think it makes much difference what you hit it with, its going to die.

I was reading some of your chat and as far as petatration factors the cci hollow point will put that to rest.I was looking at a site called Varmint AL's Field Testing The .17 HMR take a look at that site I think it will impress you all.I would not hesatate to take the .17 HMR out yote hunting and would not miss a heart beat to shoot one out to 150 yards with it, I do think i would use the cci for yote though there is a big diffence in the cci and honady bullets. and looking at the information posted on that site i think the 17 grain bullet out preforms the 20.
