My boss is a Reconnaissance Marine and he is a great friend of mine. He always carries his 3-day assault bag wherever he goes. Once when we were drinking beer watching this survival show I notice him put his bag in between his legs. When the subject came up about starting fires. He pulls out a baggy full of tiny cotton balls with a lighter inside.

We went outside and he lit one. All you do is satuarte cotton balls with patrolium jelly and one cotton ball will burn for at least 2 minutes. Another think that is good to have with you is a peice of foil to block the wind and have something to set it on.

Do yall have any other witch doctor tips or techniques?

Yeah, during SHTF, guns help me get what I need.

If I have to start a fire in a pinch, I use a high-tech method. What I do is gather some paper, dried grass, or tinder. Then I use my body to block wind if there is any. Next I light it with the Bic lighter I carry with me when I'm in the field. I know this sounds very difficult and confusing, but with some practice it can be mastered.

some kindling in a ziplock. Then, a small rock and a piece of flint is the best way to go. The rock & flint can get wet & still sparks, sparks whether there is wind or not...it is nice.

Build a little teepee of sticks.
Open two of your 7.62X54R shells. Dump the powder of one in a pile under the sticks.
Cap the second with some cotton wool or paper. Chamber it.
Shoot into the sticks with your trusty M44 Mosin.

WHOOSH! Instant campfire.

Get some fine steel wool (non-soap, just steel) and when you need fire, pull off some and touch it with a 9 volt battery. Instant fire. Old boy scout trick. Even a battery you'd swear is dead will have enough juice to make fine steel wool go. Great part about it is that it can be soaking wet and it will still light.

I got a magnesium fire starter on my key ring and usualy two lighters in my pocket at all times.

I was a desert survival instructor for a while and one that I used a lot was the portable camp fire. Find a gord and smash a small hole in it and pack it full of grass, really pack it tight, then put a small cole in it. The coal will burn for a long time and when you need fire, just blow and the coal will lite the tinder and you have flame.

I have too many tricks to list.

magnesium fire starter, bic lighters, steel wool - not alot of tricks but I have to keep things simple or I get cornfused.

When it's wet outdoors and the wood is damp or wet find some pine sap or collect it for when you might need it.
You'll still need a lighter or a match but when it's lit a little cunk will burn a long time and will dry out a small twig fire that you can then add larger piece's of wood. Done it. Mike

Just A CAR : I was in my shop a little while ago and found a big bag of steel wool that I bought a while back to refinish a rocking chair for my wife.
And I thought of your post, so I grabbed my jumper cables and hooked them to my lawn tractor battery.

I then opened the bag of steel wool and then jabbed the ends of the battery cables into the steel wool.

I can honestly say with out a dout that this is an excellent fire starter.

Matter of fact the flash was so brite' I just now can see good enough to type this reply.

Well my wife is hollaring for me to come on...she going to cut some of the singged hair out on my head and my eyebrows and mustash will grow back.

It works good, really good, but i think I'll stick with pine knotts. Mike

Mooseman 684 since I did the test with the steel wool. I comm'in down with the worst sun burn on my head than I got when I went and dug for diamonds at Murphysboro crater of diamonds here in Arkansas. OH !

You are lucky you didn't lose an eye or something...The instructions were to pull off a SMALL amount and use a 9 volt battery, Not a big hunk and a 12volt Battery...its like the difference between a firecracker and an M80...Flash burns ain't fun !
