Got a E German Makarov!

East Ger Mak made in 1961 for $225. The grips are a rough/worn looking black plastic grips with the letter "C" on them. Anybody know if there original or what the "C" stands for? Where in EG were Maks made-anybody know? This is my first real Makarov. I have a Hungarian PA63 9x18 that I got last year but real Maks are tough to come by. There was a Bulgarian Mak at the same shop yesterday for even less than the East German Mak but it was snatched up before I could get back today with the cash. Anybody know where I can get some nice wooden replacement grips for a decent price?

The Makarovs were made at the Ernst Thaelmann factroy in Suhl.
Never heard of a Makarov grip marked with a "C", but it is impossible to comment further without pics.

No camera but have you seen the red Bulgarian grips that have the star on them? The C on my E German mak is the same size and location as that star. These grips are so rough looking I can't believe they would be aftermarket grips. They have a thumb rest on the left side which isnt representative of any aftermarket grips I'm familiar with. The checkering is rough and uneven looking. They are old and definately not made in the West. They are even uglier than CZ52 grips. Now that is ugly.

I looked in My grip asst. and found a set made by Pearce Grips for B-West company for the Makarov. They are similar to the Pachmayer Grips made out of Black rubber. You should be able to get a set...They feel nice !

There are various mas production versions of Makarov grips out there. I have examples of a dozen or so and have seen many others.
From time to time, I have also seen cobbled versions of Makarov grips.
Sounds like you have some cobbled-up version.

As to grips, Dennis Marschalko makes wooden grips:
Gunboards - WTS Makarov and PA-63 wood grips.
