Spray Anti-barking Collar

I just bought a Spray Anti-barking Collar. This will be my first run at using one of these. Low and behold it doesn't come with training instructions. I'll look up general training instructions on the Web and talk to friends but does anyone have any do's and dont's advise?

Never used a spray collar, always went with the electric onces. Let me know if the spray one works, it will be interesting to see.

Well...I did a very controlled test run tonight. By the time the 2nd dog walked by the house my dog only barked once lightly and then shut up. She shut up after barking only a couple times at the 1st dog...looking a little confused but with a rewarding "good hush" she may be quickly learning what is expected. I will continue the controlled stuff and hopefully I can modify her behavior. I personally don't care if she barks at passing dogs...she simply wants to play but at 7 am or 10 pm when it could bother the neighbors...oh well...it may just be easier to move back to the country where we belong!!! ;o)

I'm having great success with the spray collar. But I do believe my success is attributed to many factors that most people don't have. I have one dog with one specific time and place of barking that I want to limit. I introduced the collar in a controlled situation...for example no other dogs barking beside her to encourage her to ignore the spray. Also my dog is "soft" when it comes to negative enforcement. I'll write more as I figure things out...

I have one dog with one specific time and place of barking that I want to limit. I have been using the Anti-bark Spray Collar for 3 weeks or so and I’m sold. I have used it on my dog and my friends dog both with great success in what the intended use was. What I needed my dog to do was stop barking when someone with a dog walked in front of my house. I introduced the collar and while watching for a “situation” to arise I immediately went out and praised her when she stopped barking. This happened quickly.

The second dog is a little Heeler, Ruby, and every bit a Heeler. When she rides in the crate in the back of the truck the minute the car engine stops and there doesn’t seem to be a human boss around she starts snarling and barking telling the other dogs that she is now the boss and just how they should behave. Someone walking by the truck would think there was a rabid dog crated in the back…well except the presence of two other dogs asleep ignoring her commands. With Ruby since she has been corrected in the past with a simple spray bottle we simply put the collar on and let her figure it out. Within 3 barks she got the picture. After a few rounds of this Glenda started to hang a spray bottle on the crate door…no barking at all. The goal with hanging the spray bottle is since she already associates it with a corrective spray we may eventually be able to simply hang the bottle without the collar.

Certainly the spray collar has limits. My goals and the way I used the collar were limited too. The first thing I’d like to point out is I really wasn’t trying to change the dogs’ 24/7 behavior. By this I mean I had a specific situation I wanted to correct, I wasn’t trying to stop all barking when I wasn’t around. A result of how I used the collar (cold without behavior modification training with it) the dogs know when the collar is on and when it’s not and even when it is on they will sometimes still do a “test” bark when the stimulation to bark is too high. They aren’t dumb. But the test bark may go away if I’m vigilant with the collar.

Pressurized canister of Citronella spray is used to fill the collar...but the water hose works faster for training!

Well...like a dork I left the Spray Collar on when I took my dog swimming last night...thought I had just thrown away $70. But after drying it overnight it is working this morning. Anyone know of a waterproof variety of these collars?
