I live in California too, and I don't mind those tests. All their doing is making sure the would be owner demonstrates the ability to handle these firearms. Whats at stake? If you don't pass the tests, you don't deserve own a pistol or revolver. I wouldn't want to give firearms out to people who can't take care of them.
Responsible gun owners are the only people who needs guns.
However, I don't agree with gun-bans. Instead of banning certain guns or parts, dealers should sell strictly to qualified people. Heck, a person should be able to by a full automatic MAC-10 with 30 round magazines, as long as their able to be responsible with them and keep them locked up safely so people can't steal them.
