Hi from Downunda

Hi guys, Im new to this site but it looks pretty good.

I mainly hunt for deer but also shoot hares, feral cats, and possums round our farm. My toys include a BSA 7X57, Browning BLR .284, H&K SL8-4 (.223), and a Ruger 10/22.

I live in the South Island West Coast of New Zealand where the grass is always green and the deer are plentiful!

So tell us NZ. Is New Zealand as beautiful as the travel brochures make it seem? Are you a sheep farmer?

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

Zen900, No I'm not actually farming. I grew up on the farm and still like to get out with the toys but my main occupation is commercial pilot. I get to see a lot more of NZ than most. Great destination for tourists and lots to do.

For some info and pics about the flying I do go to:

Air West Coast

Our farm backs up to the bush and the Southern Alps so there is plenty of opportunity for four-legged wanderers to come out of the bush!

Has anyone else had the opportunity to use the H&K SL8-4 (or -1). Im interested to hear how other people find them.

Yep, I will have to agree! I have recently purchased a Ruger 10/22 so I guess that makes me a customer too!!

Havent done much with it yet but hoping to reign some terror on the local possums and hares this weekend.

I've been doing some reading on the site and there is definitely some good info here.

Thanks all and its good to be along!

The European Hare was introduced into NZ in 1851 (so the website says) for sport and is now fairly widely distributed.

There are rabbits in other areas of NZ and even seen a few on the road on the way to work but none on our farm.

Every so often we will go out in the 4X4 with the spotlight and will shoot 50-60 hares on the farm in a night.

They are good to shoot though and can run real fast with hot lead on their tail! You just need to make sure you lead them out at 100m+ with the .223 or .22Mag

Has anyone here used the H&K SL8? I find it really good for hares and is good for larger game also. They are used for shooting wallabies down south but I havent done that.
