| Funny you should mention that. I was looking at some disposable dust type masks (for people with allergies doing dusty work) and saw some of the commercial/professional grade respirators. I thought to myself - "I'll bet that would be good to have on-hand!" Of course, I'm not expecting Mississippi to be a big target, so I decided to keep shopping! |

| Senior Member | After Desert Storm (1991) Israel dumped a lot of gas masks on the market they had for their population against the scuds. The filters were cheap too. Wish I had bought more now. I've been sitting on a few masks and a dozen filters and used one filter when I glued some shower board up in the bathroom. It was some potent smelling glue but I never smelled a hint of the glue. I think the filters are only good for a few hours though once you pull the rubber plug on them.

Oh, and that solvent? MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone), that I used while working at BF Goodrich Aerospace to clean adhesive off of aircraft evacuation slides that we were servicing. I had a rag literally dripping-soaked that was not 3 inches from the cartridge while working in a tight area and I didn't smell a thing. For reference, you could smell that stuff on a rag from about 100 feet away if they had the doors closed in the warehouse-sized building we were in.

| I have a couple of the Israeli masks, and a half dozen sealed filters. Masks are tricky things though. If you have a full beard, fit can be difficult. In the Navy when we enlisteds were still allowed beards, we had to keep 'em trimmed to get a proper mask seal. Also, remember, they still need outside air. If you are in an area that gets filled with unbreathable stuff, the oxygen gets displaced - you can still suffocate! As far as SHTF use goes, a lot of the military gases in use can kill by skin contact too - you really need a full suit for real protection. Sportsman's Guide is now advertising both Israeli and Swiss gas masks, with extra filters available.

| By no means am I an expert on gas masks but I do know that if they are cheap they are cheap for a reason. If you want one to save your life spend the money for a good one. The millenium mask is pretty good and is popular with police departments. It uses standard 40mm canister filters which can be bought online.
