Need info on a contract item

I have found an 1888 commision rifle that has either Chinese or japanese markings on it. This sounds extremely rare to me. It is in fair-poor condition and needs a few parts. Bolt is loose, but for 79$ and a little work I think it might fetch a pretty price! What do you know of these. It sounds like a contract item?

That was pretty much the general consensus I had gotten from others. That was my first sighting of those.
