Yup, squirrel hunting is one of my favorite pre-deer season activities.

The drought has seemed to drop the squirrel population down a bit here as well, its a bummer. I usually use a P235/75R16 to thin the herd down a bit here.

Yes, I have been in that situation before, and the squirrel hunting was absolutely horrible, they would not come out of the trees, and they stayed denned up most of the day. They got up and moved a little bit in the evenings, but it really wasn't worth the trouble.

Smile OOOOOOOOhhh dem squirells!!

Howdy folks,I see you all enjoy hunting squirrell.
Please begin by forgiving my ignorance, you could engrave what I know about squirrels on an aspirin with a crow bar!!!!,all I know of them is the cute cartoon/dysney characters.
We dont have a squirrell here in OZ that I am aware of anyhow,so I was just wondering where they fall in the line of things in your respective locations can you eat them?,are they feral? rodent vermin? or what?
Do they cause some problem or damage something?
Is there any control on the hunting of them in terms of qty and methods, gender etc...?
Are they wary, agile or clever??
I guess you could (and probobly do!!!) hunt them with anything!!! but they dont look as if they would need much "stopping Power"
Regards.

Been twice this season so far. Me and my buddy picked off 3 with the .410's Sunday. We could have got a lot more but Doug had to get to church. I'm trying to get one with the new air gun at asometime for something different.

I simmered them up with a little salt and pepper to tenderize. Quartered them up and stuck them on the grill with BBQ sauce. Excellent.

Squirrel hunting is first and deer hunting is 2nd with me because I can slip, stalk through the woods hunting them. I don't know the condition of the mast crop this year though we had a lot of rain in the latter part of May, all of June and Isolated rain in July and No rain yet in August.

OZHUNTER62 Squirrel hunting is as close to actual hunting as you can get. You can go sit with your back against a tree where's theres oak trees or my favorite way is to be in the woods before day light and wait until you see tree limb motion or the squirrel and silently make your way to the critter or wait to see if he comes with'en your shooting range. You can even hear them cutting acorns ( That means when the squirrel is opening the acorn with his teeth) and some times you can be under the squirrel and the acorn shells rain down on your head.
Smothered squirrel in gravy with home made bisquits is a delicacy to me and remember to spit out the lead shot like you do when you spit out water mellon seeds.
While your squirrel hunting is a good time to check out the Deer signs if you hunt the same woods for deer.
Though I hunt Deer at times like I do squirrells, It's not very safe, though the land I hunt on is owned and some is leased thus it is Posted. But it's stll not safe because theres the ones that disregard the law and trespass...You could get shot Deer season so it's best to hunt in a stand in my part of the country.

I prefer hunting squirrels with the leaves STILL on the tree's where you can get closer to them with out them seeing you (some times) And I use a 12 ga. FULL Choke shotgun with # 6 shot.
Some may say they use a modified. My Remy 870 w/full ckoke works better for me because of the tall timber we have here.
I didn't mention squirrel hunting with a good squirrel dog. but that is the ultiment way to hunt them with kids or friends...A.H

Squirrel hunting I haven't done for many years. However, squirrel trapping and dispatching I have done a lot of since last Friday morning when I caught three. Then On Sunday two more went for the sunflower and corn kernals bait.

Then again this morning another squirrel couldn't resist before he met his fate with my .177 Daisy Pellet rifle. That's six since last Friday morning. They're all resting now iln a trash bag inside another trash bag tied tightly. I'm not gonna smell inside there or it might make me sick.

Reason for this is because they've been picking many of my tomatos for the past month which pizzed me off. My question is how many more squirrels will venture inside my metal trap before the rush to my tomato's stops.

AH, you're right on about squirrel hunting. I actually enjoy it more than deer hunting anymore. I prefer a .22 though (keeps my eyes sharp - at least as sharp as they can be for 45 year old eyes). Besides, with deer hunting it's one shot and the fun is over and the work begins. With squirrels, I can shoot four or five and then carry them out with one hand.

Ox... (Honest Truth) Years ago I noticed from hunting every evening in a certain area that when you killed a squirrel(s) another would come along and take it's place.
So you might be exterminating the whole area...LOL !
I wish you could find a more humane way to displace the critters, it's sad to think about the repeated BB's hitting them until they die.
Good Luck...A.H

Casull I got what I think is a better 22 magnum rifle a few weeks ago and when Deer season is over and if it is legal I'm going to use my Deer stands for hunting squirrels.
You know the 200 squirrels that run and play around your deer stand when your deer hunting, I'm going to pick some of them off. Should be fun...A.H

I feel bad for you guys in the drought/hot areas. It has been a cool and rainy sumer in NH. I live in woods full of oak trees. Everything is thriving. I do not hunt, although I am a proven carnivore. So I am not in the least against hunting. I am keeping the game around my house for SHTF situations. Then it's .22 time.

A few years back wee had trouble with squirrels literally comsuming the wood of the house. I seems the people we bought the house from had been FEEDING them! Over the course of the next year I killed about 60 of them with a Crosman 1077 (CO2 semi-auto pellet gun), 1 shot kills for the most part. And yes, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the critter who just ate the knobs off your grill plummet from the top of a pine tree....THUD!

That's almost a mortal sin, Ox. There's gotta be a recipe for squirrels and tomatoes out there somewhere...

The only way to kill a squirrel for eating is with a 22 otherwise you end up with cracked molars. Nothing like the sound of a squirrel barking at you right before his fall.

Those squirrels aren't gonna get any mercy from me if they continue wiping out my tomato crop. I know of six which won't eat there again. Only about 10 years ago I noticed a squirrel once in a while in my back yard...but it ate acorns from my oak tree.

However, this season those tree rats have multiplied, brought in their long lost cousins, etc, and have focused their summer meals in my vegetable garden which was their fatal decision.

By pumping my .177 six or seven pumps it has plenty of penetrating power to make it quick work to dispatch them. It's rated as a 1000-fps pellet rifle.

So...since yesterday afternoon when the last squirrel was caught, none of his stupid peers has made the same fatal mistake.
