| Senior Member | Squirrel Calls Does anyone try to use calls for Squirrel Hunting?I have heard that in certain parts of the country it works fairly well.I occasionally can call a squirrel out in the open for a clear shot or sometimes get one barking so I can locate it but that is the extent of it for me.I make the call with my voice. What are your experieces with calling and what type of calls do you use? |

| For those that have there squirrels seasons open in Sept. and Oct. you can squeak out the corner of your mouth, with practice you can get pretty good at squeaking LOL ! Then take the palm of your hand and rub around the corner of your mouth while squaking LMAO...to where your squeaking sounds are distressed. I'm serious though this is funny. You'll have a stampede of squarrels comeing to the resue ! Now when i mentioned your seasons opening early is because this works better then, and you still have all the leaves on the trees to better conceal you, plus here in Ark you still have the corp of young squirrels and this commotion will cause other squirrel to come investagate or attack...Good Luck and let me know if it works because I read it in a Arkansas Outdoors magazine at the Barber shop..HAHAHA.ha..A.H |

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | I sometimes get squirrels attention by making a noise which sounds like a crow sound. I've listened to them many times while I'm sitting on my back porch. When they're under stress they sort of bark, which I can almost copy with my "sssqueeessschhh" sound which definitely gets their attention. They usually run up the tree and look at me like "what in the he l l is that?"

| I've called bushytails with a squirrel bark call that mimics their alarm bark. It seems to work just fine to get attention, but they for sure will see your movements, so you better be sure to get on target fast. You may also try this. On those crazy days when the squirrels will not sit still for anything, try a red-tailed hawk call. Believe me, every one of those rats within hearing will scamper up a tree trunk and flatten out as far as possible. Best case scenario is to have a partner working the call while you get all the shooting. With an accurate 22, a partner, and lots of tree-rodents it's possible to get a limit in just a few minutes. |

| Senior Member | Thanks for all the great information on Squirrel calling. It is a subject that is not often discussed but no doubt really works on them Bushytails.I can clearly remember stepping into the woods with my father over 50 years ago and hearing and seeing a Fox Squirrel give us a scolding. It is a sound and sight I still enjoy to this very day.I will be taking my Grandson out this week end for his very first Squirrel hunt and I can only hope we can also get one to scold us. |

| Member | A cheap rubber squirrel call I used for the first time ever. I ducked around trees, listened then very rarely let out a few challenging squeeks. I taped the call to the bottom strap of my small backpack, right hand barely left butt of shotgun. The critters went nuts in the canopy or carefully moved down trunks offering brief headshots. I guess do not overdo it I'm no expert, 2wks experience my freezer is stocked (now I do prefer steak, sausage etc also) |
