| What is your bow set-up?
I know there has to be more than a couple bow hunters on this fourm, and with bow season right around the corner, I was curious to see what people here use for archery hunting. Right now, I use a Fred Bear bow, its about 6 years old, shooting 55 lbs. I use Gold Tip Expedition Hunter 5575 arrows, shooting 100 Grain RazorBak fixed blade broadheads. I would like to pick up a BowTech Tomkat sometime this winter, they are really good bows for the money. |

gee, all this modern suff im starting to feel old fashioned. my favorite is my 1966 bear grizzly recurve 45# with cedars topped with bear razorheads. my almost modern bow is an '84 bear whitetail II(w/wheels not cams) 60# flinging PSE equalizers #2114(XX75) with 145gr wasp cam-loc II's. someday i may have to modernize!

AH, lefty if you like it and it works good no need to modernize, it was just cheaper to buy new than get my 20 year old high country back in shape.

The Fred Bear I am shooting is a double cam, it is at least 6 years old, probably more like 10 years old, so I am by no means "modern." I just want to upgrade because I am going to do urban deer hunts, so I want a more modern, faster, quieter bow.

Lng Rng, i'm by no means an expert, but faster usually means noiser, so invest in a set of stick on limbsavers also. My old high country was slow but quiet, my new parker sounded like a 30-06 going off until i put the limbsavers on and a s-coil limbsaver stabilizer. Like I said, i'm no expert.

Heavydrop, my experiance with the newer bows is that they are very fast, and quiet. I was shooting my friends Guardian, which probably out shoots my Fred Bear by 40 FPS, with much less noise, and no hand shock at all. All of the noise and vibration dampening products out now are great. It is hard to see how manufacters are going to improve on the products they have out now.

Hi Lng Rng. I have a Parker extreme hunter mag. I like Parker cuz they are made about an 1 1/2 hrs away from me...and the bow was a gift. =-) It pulls 64lbs. I switched to Easton carbon arrows (400 8.1 gpi) last year from aluminum 2216 xx75. I use 85grain G5 Montec fixed broadheads. I'd like 100grain, but these are what I have, and things get expensive. I like the Montec because you can sharpen them easily and they are made from one piece of steel. I have used EXP 100 expandable broadheads. They are nice because they fly exactly like practice bullet tips. I use a whisker biscuit for aluminum, and shoot carbon (recommended by a good friend and archery expert) I do not like the whisker biscuit for only one reason, it eventually warps/tears my fletches. Other than that, it is great for keeping your arrow resting true. I have a vital bow gear pro fix green 1 pin sight. It is excellent because it has a glow in the dark strip under 1 yard fiber. Stays bright for those "moment before DARK" chances. Also made of metal pieces, etc, and not plastic. Simple and solid. I have an inexpensive Tru Fire release. |

Dang bills! Every week it's something else hammering away at the MAD Money. Trigger release broke two seasons ago. It held when it wanted too. Switched back to natural finger hold. Oops! Sure changes point of impact. Planning to change to carbon arrows with 100 grain tips and Whisker Biscuit. Hate it when in tree and arrow falls out bow. Doh!

One thing that is true, there are so many set-ups anymore, you're certainly able to find the perfect one through a little trial and error.

I use a 5' 11" English Long bow #60; 29 1/2" Port Orford Ceder arrows w/ triple bladed Bear Razor broadheads for deer and/or hogs or blunts when squirrel hunting. In thick cover I use a Kasari Turkish horse bow #57 with the same arrow set-up. No sights or releases either I'm good at 40 yds or less with both bows. Of course I practice a good bit, at least 1-2 hours every other day weather permitting Last edited by Cyrille; 09-09-2007 at 03:40 PM. |

No really Cyrille that is remarkable. Practicing that much, shooting / hitting your target becomes second nature. When I was about 9 I was given a fiberglass bow and arrow setup. I shot, shot, shot and shot till it was dark. Several months went by and mom sent me to day camp. They had archery shooting. The counsler demonstrated safety, knocking and aiming. He shot and put it in the bull. He asked for volunteers. Natuarly I stepped forward. Skinny little awkward white boy, let it fly. Zap! Right next to the counsler's arrow and in the bull. "Lucky shot Kid!" the counsler snarled."Not" "It's simple" The challenge came to do it again. Knocked. Drew back. Zap! Any closer and yours turely would have split his arrow. ![]() Cyrille, shooting like that is awesome. Good luck.

Right now, I am good shooting to 35 yards, and I don't really want to extend my range any more with my current set-up. I have to get 5 out of 5 arrows on a paper plate from any given range before I feel comfortable shooting at an animal at the same range.

Wow! 35 yards! Paper plate? I start shooting this next week. Late. I know. Been spending time at gym and range. Getting ready for Texas State Rifle Association State Garand Match in Temple Texas.

Buddy of mine came by this evening and let me try his Elite Synergy. If you ever get a chance to shoot one, take it. Never shot a more balanced quiet bow. I did not think I would like the skinny neck on it but you just cradle it in between your thumb and fore finger and shoot. It will stay level in you hand after you shoot. He likes his so much he put the new model on layaway The Elite Envy. This year they are around $650.00 Next year they will be an even 1000.00 Too much for me but he bow hunt exclusively throughout the entire season.

I am hunting with a selfbow that I built in June of 1994.It is made from a Shagbark Hickory tree and pulls 70 plus pounds at 26 inches It is 63 inches long.It is an early Eastern woodland style flatbow and you shoot the arrow off your hand.I shoot cedar arrows with feathers and Zwickey broadheads.I like 15 yard shots or maybe a little farther.I find this bow the most challenging and satisfying bow I have hunted with and this is my 40th year behind the bow.Theres something about building one for your self and taking game with it.
