looking for a good survival guide

I had a great survival guide that showed various trapping tips, forraging and other things but bes of all it had full color photos of plants that were edible, and ones that would kill you. it also had full color pictures of poision animals and insects. The book is lost now and i am looking for another for my B.O.B any ideas on one much like that one? i like the color plant photo and description. Thanks

I have some old-issue military guides for suvival as a sniper. This included both foraging the land for sustanance as well as evading persuers. They also included silent dispatching of enemies and CQC. They have some awesome information and reads.

I will see what they are when I get home and let you know.

On another note, check out the books and videos on:

Alone in the Wilderness
Alaska Silence & Solitude

These are about a guy who left his family and city life to live in the Alaskan wilderness for 30 years. The first video was created when he arrived. The second was when the filmographer visited him 25 years later. They have some awesome ideas and stuff on surviving in the wilderness. They don't give detailed descriptions, but if you are somewhat wilderness-savvy, you should be able to figure it out from what they show you on the videos.

Not only are they very informative, they are very entertaining and really makes you think about the simple things in life.

Hope that helps.

EDIT:

Also check these out, I think the books I got were these:

Military Field Manuals - Military Training Guide

The "Military Survival Guide"
and those under "Survival eBooks" on the left.

The Army Survival Guide has all that accept the plant pictures aren't in color. I little while back, I saw in Barns and Noble there was a book in the military section titled
The Only Survival Guide You'll Ever Need ... or something like that for about $25. The only problem is that it was kind of large and weighed about 3-4 lbs. It would still be nice to have.

Amazon.com: SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, in Any Climate, on Land or at Sea: Books: John Lofty Wiseman

Thinking about this one, it has some pictures(drawings) of plants and animals, mushrooms that are in color.

From reading the reviews on amazon I think this is what i use to have:
Amazon.ca: US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76: Books: Department of Defense

It says in one of the reviews it has color pictures of plants and animals, the one i had before must have been a little bit older because it was a different color, a dark gray.

Any other ideas or thought would be appreciated.

i just got one a couple weeks ago, it is a behemoth of a book. its something like 950 pages or something like that. Only 25 bucks. Its called the ultimate guide to Us Army survival, skills, tactics and techniques. Covers homemade tools, edible plants, close range combat, first aid and a few more things. I havent gotten the chance to go all the way through the book, but from what i have seen it is very useful.

A Boy Scout Handbook isn't a bad choice either. It's written for kids, so it's damn near foolproof to follow the directions.

It is about knowing when and when Not to use a Gun, How to use it, and more than that ,Survival is being able to do Anything with Nothing. A gun won't get you water if it isn't around. Won't get you food if there's nothin to shoot. Life isnt a Video game, you only get one chance !

I would suggest checking out the Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook its 15 bucks. My friend had one in high school and it showed you what to do if you were ever caught in a bad situation like how to survive a poisonous snake attack, how to treat frostbite, and how to perform a Tracheotomy.

Try any of Robert W. Pelton's Survival Manuals

I think very well of the one that lives in my Grab & Go Bag: The Official Pocket Survival Manual, by Robert W. Pelton. It was published by the Freedom & Liberty Foundation in 1996.

The book, a side-opener type, is about the size of a 200 page paperback. It is printed on sturdy paper that will withstand at least a little wetness (unlike the US Army survival manual it replaced in my pack). It's aimed mostly at North American conditions; but the principles it teaches are applicable worldwide. I find its presentation of information much more accessible than that of the Army manuals I've read.

Suffice it to say I like it well enough that I've paid Amazon prices (regrettably, it's out of print) to buy copies of it to include in Grab & Go bags I've made up for family and friends. I also like the fact that it includes advice on dealing with survival stress and depression, which things like the Boy Scout Handbook and the Army manuals don't really address. You can expect to pay about $25 for it when you can find one, unless you get incredibly lucky at a book sale - and it's worth every penny.

I'm looking for a copy to put in the home library as well, so I don't have to break out my pack and dig it out when I want to peruse it on the 'absorb information by osmosis' theory of pleasure reading. Pelton is a recognized expert in this field, and his no-nonsense approach to writing makes the book a really good read and practical as all get-out if you ever need to use it in a for-real situation.

Here's a link to Amazon if you are interested:
