Squirrel Species

What type of squirrels are in your area.Here in West Central Indiana we have Red (Fox) and Gray Squirrels.I have also saw the Eastern phase of the Fox Squirrel which looks similiar to the Gray but larger.Occasionally there is a piebald in White or Black and last year I hunted one quite a bit but was never able to take him.It was a Fox Squirrel that had a pure white body,a red spot around one of his eyes and a red tail.A very pretty and unusual looking Squirrel.

In So. Arkansas we have a gray cat squirrel and a red fox squirrel some black and a few white (albino) ones which are very rare.
I admire hunters patient enough to hunt gray squirrels with a 22 because there hardly ever still.
The Fox squirrels grow pretty big here and are very abundant where I hunt. The black and white ones are the rarest and you hardly ever see many of them.
I prefer to hunt them with a 12ga with full chock due to heavy foilage here and distance...A.H

We have both the Fox and Grey's here. Greys are a challenge for .22's.

We have grays in big #s here in SC. Fox squirrels are very very unusual to see which is why I don't hunt them. I stick to the grays although it isn't illegal to hunt Fox squirrels. I haven't seen a Fox Squirrel in 20 years.

You name em we seem to have them here, chipmunks, grey and reds, some fox and ground squirrels quite a few of the black ones have yet to notice an albino, mainly I suspect because they don't survive very long between the ground predators and birds of prey which are also very abundant here.

Zen the Red fox squirrels are as plentyful as the greys here.

A.H. is right,the grays can be a challenge to hunt with a rifle.It seems they are always busy and moving around constantly.I find them easier to get a shot at when they are on the ground and hiding nuts.The gray squirrel in West Central Indiana are smaller than the Fox and seem to get mange and worbels more.Due to there size a head or neck shot saves more meat. Some people say the grays fry up more tender and are better eating than the Fox Squirrel.I like the Fox Squirrel because they are a bigger and offer more of a meal due to there size.

We have Fox, Grey, and Red squirrels here in so. La.
The grey is more abundent and the smallest of the species. The Fox and /or red (some consider them diffrent species) are bigger and make the best stew, whereas the greys are delicious baked, fried on in a stew.

Basically it's Chipmunks, Red and Eastern Gray in my woods. I put sunflower seeds out in the winter for the birds and the squirrels come and take their share. Keeps the cats entertained. I have a wetland in my back yard, and I mean right in my back yard, so I get to see a lot of wildlife. My 3.5 acres is mixed conifer and broadleaf forest with the wetland running through it.

We have the common Greys, far less common Foxes, and scarce Whites (a true species, not albinos!). The whites are found along the river and on the grounds of our Natural Science & History Museum, where they are protected. The Foxes are now protected too - can't legally shoot them.
I've seen Greys from pale grey to nearly black, and foxes from light blonde to near-black, as well as two-toned!
The foxes are stupid though - whistle and they go about ten feet up a pine tree and look at you. Easy shot.
I have also seen a male fox mating a female grey - I shot the grey out from under him - ruined his day . . .

We have the usual greys at my house; however at my Mom's hous about 7 miles away all she has is the black
squirrels. I've seen them on several occasions as I do her lawn weekly.

All I ever see here are greys with bodies and tails each about the size of a 20oz coke bottle. There's a ton of 'em in the neighborhood.

We have Red and Grey squirrel in Maine. Grey have a hunting season in november with a bag limit, while Red Squirrel are hunted year round with no bag limit. They're in the same category as groundhog and coyote.

I don't normally shoot Grey squirrel, but red squirrel are my enemy. They constantly chatter like they're always mad, and if they get inside of a camp or shed during the winter, they do severe damage. I've seen people throw out couches, mattresses, etc, just from red squirrel.

I am from eastern Oklahoma and there we had fox and greys but sincs i moved up into northern oklahoma just shy of the kansas line we have red squirrel , have not seen one grey
