Question 9x18 and 9mm

Can you shoot the 9mm largo or any other 9mm round in the Makarov 9x18, Have been ask on this and i seem to never get a clear answer as to why not, I am new to owning this firearm and would like to get to use it more often, seems i have a lot of 9mm cartridge's that i got some time ago but they are not the 9x18 for this firearm. Sorry there is no such thing as a stupid question just the answer's.

no you can not, 9X18 means the bullet is 9MM in diameter and the case is 18 MM long, 9MM luger(also known as 9MM, and 9X19) means the bullet is 9 MM in diameter and the case is 19MM long, 9MM largo is a 9MM bullet with a 23MM case, so if you try to shoot 9MM largo in your makarov, it will simply not fit, it is 5MM too long, and regular 9MM is 1MM too long

38 spcl in a .357 works so why not 9x18 out of a 9x19? I have heard that shooting the 38 out th .357 leaves a burn ring in the cylinder so the shorter mak round would also leave a burn ring in a 9x19 chamber which could inhibit chambering/extraction when you switch back to the 9x19.

I've been told you can also shoot .380's in a 9x18, but I don't need to try it.

The biggest problem is that the 9mm mak bullet is also .010-.011 larger in diameter depending on manufacturer. As far as trying to fire the shorter rounds in a longer chamber, you can do this with .38 Sp. in a .357 because they are both rimmed cartridges and headspace off of the rim. The 9mm's mentioned all headspace off of the mouth of the cartridge. If a .380 is chambered in a 9x18 gun, it will probably have multiple problems because, not only is it going to be smaller in dia. but it is also 1mm shorter so if the extractor doesn't hold it tightly enough, the firing pin may just drive the whole cartridge forward without igniting the primer. If it does ignite, there's going to be bad juju going on in the chamber of that gun with the case being shoved forward, igniting, and then being shoved backwards vioently against the bolt face. This creates a lot more stress than I'm prepared to hold in my hand. The closest I get to this is trimming 9x19 cases down to 9x18 for 9mm Mak loads.\ or reforming .30-06 brass to 8x57 Mauser but the finished product fits the intended chamber properly.

The 9x18 Makarov is a proprietary cartridge that can only be shot in the pistols chambered for it. The bullet diameter on a 9x18 Makarav is 9.2mm or .363". The case is straight with no taper. The 9X19Luger,Nato,etc shoots a .355 diameter bullet, the case is 1mm longer and the case is also tapered from the base to mouth. .380ACP can not be safely shot in the 9x18 chamber, the bullet is .355 and the cartridge is very loose in the chamber due to size differences.

Have you a Largo? That sounds like a super duper Luger parabellum. What's it shoot like? I've never seen one.

Zen, the Largo is basically a slightly slower .38 Super without the rim. I just traded my Star Super chambered for the largo and I sort of wish I'd kept it. It is a great round and very easy to shoot. I modified my Star to use .38 Super brass and it worked fine with Super ammo as well. Sarco still has some of the Supers for a good price.

Always follow safe shooting rules ! YOUR FIREARM IS CHAMBERED FOR A SPECIFIC CALIBER,EXECPT FOR A FEW EXCEPTIONS, ie ,44MAG &44SPL. OR 357MAG & 38SPL.
NEVER EVER FIRE ANY CALIBER THAT YOUR GUN IS NOT CHAMBERED FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF YOU DO ,YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE,= SEVERE INJURY AND OR DEATH !!!!!!!!
SAFETY FIRST

In the Makarov pistol , you can buy a .380 barrel and replace the 9X18 barrel and re-pin it and that is all you have to do to it to shoot .380's as they fit and feed in the magazine just fine.

Th Makarov has the energy equivalent of a .380 plus a 22 short. I am a Mak fan. I even have extra Mak barrels.

I've seen the Largo in LLama pistols but is the Largo chambered in any modern pistols?

I have extra barrels for both my Maks so I can combo with 2- .380's or 2- 9X18's or like now, one of each !

I've seen the PA63 FEG chambred for 9x18 and .380 But the Makarov .380 and Mak 9x18 pistols are two different pistols.

Zen, the Largo isn't chambered in an modern\new firearms. I believe the last gun it was used in is the Star Modelo Super which is a 1911 clone with a much simpler action and no grip safety. There are still a bunch of these floating around, SARCO has them and i see them on Auction Arms and Gun Broker all the time.
