Home defense laws in your state?

First off, I have been reading your forum for a while and you seem like a real good group, so I have decided to register and post.
My question is, what is the law in your state reguarding home invasion or just burgulars being in your home while you are there? In our state of Connecticut you cannot do anything to someone in your home walking off with your goodies, unless your life is threatened and the intruder has a weapon. All you can do is call the police..

Don't let the goons try that here, it's been know to result in a terminal case of "High Speed Lead Poisoning" !

Welcome aboard, Mad Hatter,
You've found a great forum here and I'm glad to see your first post.
Here in the south, it's a little easier to defend your home and family but each case should be judged on it's own.
If you feel your life or your family is in danger then I don't think you'll have much trouble.
Just remember to drag them inside before calling 911. LOL

In NH you do not have to retreat from your home. As one law enforcement officer told me, "Of course if you come home to find some 15 year old kid trying to take your stereo and he's unarmed, you can't just shoot him. Kick his ass and call the police." So, there is a judgement call to be made. But on the whole, you ought not to break into peoples' homes in NH. They have been known to react with terminal violence.

Ever notice how these threads change? We started out with self defense laws and end up like Gloria Childs.

LOL TJ we is just poking fun and I admit the subject is serious but you have to admit some states have some pretty much idiotic self defense laws on the books don't you agree?

You need to start a grass roots push to get the "Castle Doctrine" adopted in your state! Provides alot of protection and discretion for a homeowner trying to protect hearth and home!

here in NC if you feel that your life or family life is in danger you can use deadly force.

Welcome! I just moved from Florida to Colorado. Thank God both states have the Castle Doctrine! I can defend myself and others at my home and anywhere I am lawfully allowed to be regardless of the BG's armed status or perceived intentions. If I feel threatened, I can take action up to and including deadly force. Most of the northeast think the BG's will simply take possessions without inflicitng harm. Headlines from all over America show that is not the case. After beating and robbing people, many invaders go the extra step and kill the occupants. This could be to eliminate witnesses and/or gang inititation. Either way, light 'em up! If they are unarmed, quote Clint Eastwood: "well, he should have armed himself!"

I've been searching the net because I'm not sure what the law actually reads here in Virginia. I can't find anything.

In NC, one may use deadly force if they or someone else is in iminent danger bodily harm or sexual assault. You may not use deadly force to prevent theft. If someone breaks into my house to steal something, I'm going to feel threatened and as Earl said, induce high-speed lead poisoning upon the intruder.
