Lads,
I spent 15 years as a LE firearms instructor and we carried SIG, 1911, S&W autos & Glock and have seen people exhibit unsafe discharges with all. As one gentleman stated the important safety is between the ears and I suggest training instead of trying to purchase mechanical safeties. All IMHO

As far as accidentaly discharges I think some serious mishandling or poor maintanince would have to happen. when my department made the switch to Glock we put them through a serious test period on of wich included clamping it in a vise and hitting the back of it with a hammer to try and get it to misfire. started with a little ballpen hamer ended up with a massive 5lb sledgehammer. the last strike hit it so hard it broke the vise flew down the hallway broke out the window fell down two stories landed on the pavement and still didnot go off! but if you still wont a manual saftey Glock does make one NYPD requested that theirs be made with one and you can special order one new with the saftey or as someone said earlier have it instaled of course i carry mine all the time one and offduty never had a problem and as far as the "Glock leg" that comes from not using a holster that covers the trigger and then snagging the trigger on something

not a good thing.

glock triggers are too light for double action, everyone knows that, if you are not prepared to deal with this, don't buy one. too light pull for me. i guess they would be good for combat. but not for me to carry. Sam

I carry a revolver. Safe to carry loaded and ready to go. Squeeze off a DA shot and the gun is safe again. Take a long shot? Cock it, shoot, and the gun is safe again. Nothing more reliable than a S&W revolver. Come in all different calibers and sizes. Solid steel or Airweight. Good bargains out there in used Smiths. Lots of aftermarket grips available. Lots of holsters available.

I have the Glock 24 target model in .40 S&W and I personally never keep one in the chamber. I would rather rack the slide back first. Besides I mostly use it for target shooting and as a back up for home defense in case something is wrong with my actual home defense gun. Which would be my "baby" Desert Eagle also in .40 S&W. The DE is also my concealed carry weapon even though I was trained with the Glock 17 while I was in LE I have just always preferred my DE. Something about having an external hammer just makes me happy lol. It all comes down to preference.

One of the cool things about the glocks though is that if you like to take it target shooting and don't like to reload or change mags a lot you can purchase 29 rd (for .40 cal) magazines for it.

Well I certainly know the Glocks have a fine reputation for quality and reliability, as does S&W and Colt. But as many here know I prefer the M1911A1 or the Hi-Power in 20+ years as a Small Arms and combat instructor, and as an LE Combat instructor I have seen a few accidental discharges. However in that same period and since I've carried the 1911 and Hi-Power cocked and locked as Dear Mr. Browning intended the piece to be carried and never once had an accidental discharge. Nothing taken away from anyones preferred carry condition, but my experience has been few people would doubt I mean "business" finding themselves suddenly staring down the business end of a cocked and now unlocked .45, it's a real attention getter without needing to master slingshotting the slide.

Actually aris, you can get that magazine (made by Schearer) with a +2 baseplate, making it a 31 rd .40S&W magazine.

Well, I am eyeing a model 26. I found for a cheap price of 315. I think it's a steal for the gun. I don't mind the fact that it doesn't have a manual safety that I can set. I have never had any trouble with Glock. I have fired many. The real safety is whats between your ears as someone else put it.

Get a ruger if your woried about safety but, if you want a glock get it because they are *amn good guns, besides a gun without bullets is like a toy without batteries, it won't do you much good, the safety in my book is a unneeded device that slows u down in the process of defending yourself, now I know some of you out ther are probably thinking ive got kids well, they should not be around your guns in the first place therefore just keep em out of reach but ready to go.

The safety defends yourself from yourself. It defends you from that one in a million mistake. Some folks tend to put their finger on the trigger every time they hold the gun. Not a good idea with a Glock.

Most people.

You know older shooters usually always have good amount of gun knowledge, safety being the most important thing but then again, you should be safer than that if you own a gun anyways.

The new KelTec 9mm uses the same trigger system as the Glocks-no manual safety that is.

Well safe handling includes not putting your finger on the trigger unless you intend on firing the gun.

I think that it is a good price and I am going to go tomorrow and try to get it. Wish me luck.
