| Welcome to the forum. Single shot will make you want to place that only shot in the correct place. The .223 will do nicely for any varmint. I started hunting at 10 going on 11. Keep your mind on the safety rules. Check out a web site www.varmintal.com/ahunt.htm[/url] This man has a lot of real good information on coyotes. Oz

| That question will get a lot of different answers. Where are you hunting? What varmints are you hunting. Close to residential areas 22 RF or its mag bigger brother. Any of the 22 hornets or the 218 bee are good and quiet (relatively) with ranges to 125 to 150 plus yards. Marmonts in the mountians at longer range start with a 222 Rem. or even a .223. These work well on larger vermints like coyotes, wild dogs etc. Ground squirrels and PD depending on the range. use any of the above. Now, all that said there are a large number of calibers from .17 through .25, that can make an entry level caliber. Years ago the 25-20 was the king of the varmint calibers. It still is good out to 100 yards. Finding a good gun and scope is more important than the caliber. The big problem is that it is hard to find rifles in all the wide varity of cartridges. You have a choice of .223, 22-250 in centerfire with most current USA production rifles. Oz

| Senior Member | Yes on the H&R Ultra Varmint 223. Don't know for certain in your area about old yellow tooth but they generally do live everywhere. ![]()

| Go with the .223 in one of the very fine AR-15 rifles. Pricey, way better then the ruger ranch rifle. As for one accurate shot, this is true on the other hand one shot wont kill mutiple coyotes. To boot, you can shoot .223 forever without ever going broke. |

| I'm going to recommend a Savage (or Stevens) bolt action. Would give more shots for multiple animals. I feel like this would serve him well for a longer time because he'll start wishing he had a faster follow up shot and have to buy another rifle. Let us know what you pick. ps go with .223

| Stevens 200 in a 223 for under 350 dollars. The action is the older Savage actions but still very accurate. Good choice for a first varmint rifle. Spend about half that cost on a good scope and you have a coyote dropper if the bullet placement is good. Oz
