Skinning Squirrel

Hey, how many of you squirrel hunters use the method shown in the linked video?

I gave it my first try this evening and now I am a "true believing convert!" For years I skinned my bushy tails using the "slit across the back and pull" method. The method shown in the video was much faster and far cleaner. Great why to skin a squirrel. However, it is important to make the initial cut as shown, cutting a bit beyond the tail, peeling back a bit of hide to step on. If you don't, and you just step on the tail, you'll have a stripped tail and an unskinned squirrel. Went there, did that.

Not a bad way to go, especially if the carcass is still warm. I still like the cut back and pull opposite ways method.

very nice. i always went with the cut off the head and peel the skin all the way down to the tail (very messy) your way sounds very clean

Especially if you gut the squirrel after you skin it, far less hair on the carcass, much neater all the way around.

I still use the old tried&true "Back Slit and Pull" method - takes their little shirts and pants off separately.

I tried it on the last two I shot. One worked slicker than snot. I don't know what happend with the other, I had the gut sack tore open and eventually about had him ripped in half.

That style probably needs to be done after you pick up the squirrel because he/she is still warm...A.H

Actually A.H., I've peeled them back fairly easily even after some time has passed. Just grabbed the the front and back legs and s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d them a bit. After that, everything works out pretty much the same.

I hope you had a productive hunt.

A good method for Skinning squirrels.I have done it like this since I first started skinning them.

dunno, but this is the way I was brought up to skin'em, havent really tried any other way so I cant really give you any input on what is the best way. Occasionally you will rip a gut sack, tends to be on the younger ones too.

Yep thats how i skin them just gotta be careful cutting into his tail not to break his tail bone

I thought you broke the tail bone or how else is the hide goona peel off ?

The method I use you do cut thru the tail bone and in to the skin on the back.
