Ammo for RIA .45 ACP

Hey,
just wondering which rounds are the best for the best price. Bought some cheap Walmart rounds, haven't fired any yet.

Does the round need to be specific "ACP" round or will any .45 auto do?

Thanks,
Daniel

.45 ACP and .45 auto are the same round. When buying ammo, just make sure it doesn't say anything other than ACP or .45 Auto. Auto-Rim or AR ammo is a different animal but is hard to find. If you go to a gun shop and ask for .45 ACP, you'll get what you need. Try as large a variety of ammo as you can afford and document the accuracy until you find the one your gun likes. I've had best results with Ball Ammo in my RIA .45. But, after the feed ramp is used a bit, say...oh, 500 rounds, you should be good to use wadcutters (flat head) and JHP's.

I've not found any .45 Auto ammo my RIA won't feed, however. You WILL notice a big change in accuracy with bulk practice/range ammo, though. At 6 yards, I was getting a 7" area. And it is not my shooting. If I use my Defense ammo, I can keep it within about 1-1/2 inches at that range.

great info! The learning continues.
-What does ACP mean anyway?
-Is this a good gun to learn on? I'm finishing a degreee in criminal justice and will
try to get hired on with Co Springs Police the end of next year. What do you think?

I'm sure they have standard issue side arm, but I guess practicing on anything is better than nothing.

ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol, because they were the first to come up with the ACP. That is why you will hear .380 Auto, rather than .380 ACP, even though each name designates the same thing. The term "ACP" is actually wrong when describing anything other than a Colt product, but it is used on a regular basis by alot of people. It is kind of like the whole "clip" and "magazine" thing.

There are different grades of ammunition. Some range ammo is better than others and you may find better performance by some practice ammo over others.

A 1911 is still used by many police officers and military personnel.

Most LE Agencies do not require a particular weapon and probably won't 'issue' you a weapon. Most will give you an outline of what you are able to have and you will have to buy it out of your pocket yourself. They will provide you with ammunition for duty and practice, however. But, their outline of the weapon may include different brands, types, ammunition capacity and calibers. Most all LE Agencies will not allow you to have a revolver. I have seen them use 1911's though. Typically they are High-Cap, such as Para Ordinance's Double Stack 1911's or some other brand, but they may allow a standard 1911 model semi-auto. Just be confident in your weapon's performance if you decide to carry it on you. Most officers go with a poly-carbonate weapon for a duty weapon. They are lighter and have become kind of the 'in' thing for LEO's. But, I still see guys with fully steel weapons, and they are fine with them. The new S&W M&P is a really good handgun for a duty weapon. Glock is kind of the trendy thing, but I don't really like the feel of them. They are blocky and distracting when shooting. And, the trigger "safety" hurts my fingertips.

Typically an Agency will require a certain caliber usually, from 3: 9mm to .40S&W to .45 Auto for your main sidearm. They generally will allow you to have a backup weapon of any caliber as little as a .32 or .380 Auto and those can usually be a revolver if you would like, or just a smaller Semi-Auto.

Many LE Agencies in bigger cities, Colorado Springs being one of them, will eventually train their rookies in the use of a .223, M4 style rifle/carbine. These weapons will be issued to you once you are trained and certified to use them in the line of duty. Since Columbine and the North Hollywood Bank Robbery Shooting in California in 1997, this has become popular throughout the nation. It is reported that 63% of Denver Police street cops carry an M4 with Semi-Auto and 3-round burst in the trunk of their cruiser. I believe you have to be on the force for a certain amount of time before you can request training with these weapons.

RIA ammo

Try Winchester White box, [Walmart], Federal American eagle, or CCI. You might want to look into reloading, with prices going up. It common to go through 200 a session. If the range doesn't reload, pick up your brass, as it will be to your advantage.

Bingo on the Glock CI, after about 25-50 rounds my fingertip is so fricking sore I couldn't shoot anymore. I'm not a big fan of poly guns. (except for the Walther P-22...<grin>)

I live close to a large Army base and most of the Army and Marines I get to talk with would much prefer going back to the 45 ACP for a sidearm; they call the 9mm wimpy.

I have a 40 year old Colt and it fires most anything that says 45 ACP or Auto. I do tend to stay clear of the CCI Blazer ammo however. It is best, however, to practice with a bullet weight consistant with the bullet weight of the type ammo you use for everyday self defense.

I find that the cheapest and best plinking ammo is Blazers brass cased 45 at Wal-Mart. It runs less than $12.00 per 50rds. I have shot around 400 rds in the last few months and never has a FTF and seems accurate

The Blazer Brass .45ACP is my target ammo of choice, too. I haven't found anything my RIA doesn't feed well on.... great value in a 1911 milspec! (mine is the milspec model)
