22-250 Deer Round?

Anybody use this a deer round with any success? Type of bullets if it worked? My sister is going rifle hunting and we have a 22-250 and we don't want to buy another rifle or we have a ruger mini 14 in 223 so i guess question is what round would be better.

both of those rounds are too small.
i dont care if others think it's fine or not.
unless you are capable of surgical precision dont use them.

i am a good shot and i wouldnt consider using those calibers for that purpose.

they will kill whitetail, but are not the best choice. since it is legal to use 22cal centerfires in wisconsin, the choice is yours to make. if you do choose to use it, ensure you use a bullet designed for big game, as most for the 22-250 are varmint bullets which are absolutely inadequate for the task.

yeah i know it would be nice if we had a 243 or something like that. But I was really looking for bullets to use too.

Both would work with well placed shoots, but I would recommend something a little bigger if you can find it. I have not been very impressed by Mini-14 accuracy. So, I would go with the .22-250 with a good quality bullet - something like this Federal 60gr Nosler Partition MidwayUSA - Federal Premium Vital-Shok Ammunition 22-250 Remington 60 Grain Nosler Partition Box of 20 . Still, I would urge you to find something better. Good Luck.

well then anybody know what kicks worse 30-06 or 7mm magnum cause i could get access to 7mm and I could give her the one with less kick. I am guessing it is the 30-06 i would give her cause it is also semi auto so less kick too compared to bolt action

You need to see if .22 cal. ammo is even legal in your area, first. If so, I'd use the Federal loading with the 60 gr. Nosler Partition bullet. Winchester makes a 64 gr, loading with the Power-Point bullet, but the Partition, will hold together better at high speed. A mid-range (price-wise) load would be the hornady 60 gr. S.P. I would recommend a larger cal. unless she is very familar with this gun, but it will take down a deer cleanly with good shot placement. In this area, most of the guys who use .22 centerfires prefer short-range behind-the-ear shots or heart shots with quick-expanding premium varmint bullets like the Nosler 55 gr. ballistic-tip. The .22's have the advantage of a flat trajectory and low recoil which often helps new shooters, but the light bullet weight is absolutely horrible if the shot isn't perfect. I would buy a cheap Pachmyer recoil pad for the .30-06 and have her shoot it with your preferred ammo until she can shoot it well.

Both using the same weight bullet,60 gr. the 22-250 will be faster at the muzzle and at 300 yard Impact with almost 33% more energy than the .223 at the same range. There is more than enough "Energy" in both calibers, But the wound / shock channel will be smaller due to bullet diameter, which wil demand a precision shot. Nosler partitions in 22-250 would be my choice if that is all you have to work with.
Head Shot thru the ears would be Fantastic ! A heart/ lung shot however, you better be ready to track that deer for a while, unless you catch him standing still and he is dead before he knows it!
Rich

7mm Mag has way more kick than the 30/06 with 150 grain bullets.

I have shoot both and I couldn't tell much difference between the two. Given the rounds should be fairly close recoil wise - The heavier rifle should kick less. If you use 140 gr bullets in the 7mag it should help as well.

Also, I think Remington and maybe Federal are making reduced recoil loads for both of those. The reduced recoil loads would still be a better option than the .22-250. MidwayUSA - Remington Managed-Recoil Ammunition 30-06 Springfield 125 Grain Core-Lokt Pointed Soft Point Box of 20

Also, if you check out this website ( Rifle Recoil Table ), you will notice that there is not much difference in the recoil - it does show that the 7mag has a little more recoil with the same weight bullet. But you could always drop down in bullet weight to make up the slight difference.

Still, I would recommend the reduced recoil loads

I don't know what kind of Mini-14 you were shooting but this Mini-14 can shoot pretty tight groups

if it has to be the 22-250 find the bigest grain bullet you can which is few but there is a 64 grain power point made by winchester that can be found in most gun shops, it is classified by winchester as a deer round, but shot placement is critical, i would not take a long shot. around 60 to 75 yards

PA has the same law 22 caliber and centerfire. I like many others would use somthing a bit bigger .243 is a nice round. At the same time my old uncle uses a 223 with much sucess at short yardage.

A .30-06 is rated at 20lbs recoil and a 7MM mag is rated at 21.5lbs. Heavy bullets do not stabilise with a 1in14 twist which is atandard in a bolt action .22-250.55gr flat base soft point would be the most you could expect any accuracy out of. The .223 Ruger is 1in12 and will handle a 62gr flatbase bullet. sam.

I used to work with someone that used that round for deer. Semi-auto- spray and pray. He was always talking about injured deer getting away to die in private.

Regardless of your hunting/shooting style, it is too little cartridge for humane shots.

needs extremely proper bullet placement

Yes, you can hunt deer with your round but make certain you can really place the bullet or you will lose a wounded deer bounding off in the distance.

I used a Remington Model 788 22-250 this year for deer hunting with Winchester 55 gr. Powerpoints and was very dissapointed. I shot a 100lb doe from 50 yards away a little high, it dropped the deer but when I came up to it 30 minutes later it was still alive, needless to say im usin my 308 next year.

If you loaded some light grained bullets such as 120s then the gun would kick much less.

I have used .223 and 22-250 on red deer in Australia. I prefer .303, 30-06, or 270.

When calibre and stopping power comes into question everyone says the same thing, .22calibres work 'but you have to be really accurate.'

If you can't be sure of your shot placement, you shouldn't be hunting, If you are going to gut shoot a deer, it doesn't matter if it's a 30-06 or a .22 rimfire, it's still going to run away.

I reccomend more practice practice practice, before heading for the bush.

You owe it to your sport and the animal you plan on hunting.

my 2 cents
