how about a detailed M9A1 review?

I just checked the other thread here in the Steyr forum, and the only post with more than two sentences was about a rifle....?

I have been looking longingly at the M9A1s that CDNN has. I already have five 9mm semis. Why should I add the M9A1?

Help me out here - I'm looking for a good excuse, er, reason....

I have the M40 and unfortunately can't give a very detailed review. That's because it's so reliable that there's nothing that I can tell you doesn't work.

Well, almost. I have two M40s, and only ONE had a problem with ONE kind of ammo, and that's Magtech. Never a feeding problem, it just had trouble closing all the way on that kind of ammo only. And this is after using hundreds of rounds of hollow point and even remanufactured lead ammo.

Aside from that, I have to say they're darned near perfect. Consistently group about 4" aimed fire at about 50ft, I think. That's enough for any personal defense and most LE shots. I'd carry it as a hunting backup if it were legal to use that way in my state.

I bought the Steyr on a leap of faith and thought it would be the first of many handguns. Only recently has that become the case, because for years I didn't feel the need to have any other pistol. In fact, I bought my second Steyr before I bought any other pistols, so that if anything broke I'd still have a working Steyr, and if it didn't, there'd be one for me and one for the wife, or one for each hip if I had a Lara Croft moment.

Since it is not as common as some other handguns, what about holsters? Are magazines readily available?

Magazines are readily available from CDNN, which has been a good source for the Steyrs and mags for a while. That's where I got my first, and probably where most decent prices ultimately originate from.

I have a holster that I like very much, and now that you mention it would like another. But I looked it over and can't find any sort of name anywhere. I think I got it at a gun show for $15. I believe it was a generic mid-size auto holster.

I guess my hesitation right now is based on holster availability (I carry everywhere that I legally can) and parts availability. Since the Steyr isn't that common or popular, I can't help but wonder if it might be an orphan at some point...?

That's why I got two. For holsters, I think your chances are good for finding a universal one that works.

And remember, as long as you buy at a fair price, you can always sell it later and not lose all your money. And if it works out for you you'll be glad you got it.

I call wanting two identical pistols to shoot at once "The Lara Croft Syndrome." There's no practicality behind it. And I don't think I could be caught dead dressing like Lara Croft. My proportions are all wrong.

Tell you what, Jay, after reading up on the Ruger SR9, I think it may be the closest thing to a Steyr out there. Polymer framed with metal inner frame, striker fired, manual safety, 4"ish barrel. I'd love to compare the two side by side.

So does anyone seen the correlation between Cetme/G3 owners and M9 or M40 owners? I too have a Cetme and steyr M9( old style) love it and will never sell. not a clunky peice of crap like the Glock. and it performs beautifully.If there was a company off the radar who produces excellent firearms it STEYR.

Jay, I have had a little difficulty finding holsters as well. I can find many for the "S" version but not the M9. This of course is only with the custom fitted polymer holsters, it fits in my drop leg and any all purpose holster very snug. I think I'm going to try a glock 19 holster and see if that fits. also you may try a sig holster.
