| Member | pre-winter bushy tails? Gun/ big game season is almost here. Spent time just scouting with no weapon. Great squirrel scenery. They are on the ground now keeping track of their stash. Any change in hunting habits out there? how are you adapting to winter bushy tails? (well see). I am down to one carcass in the freezer it freaked the crap out of this girl when she opened it (sqrl. staring) other ruined. Just seeing if theres any sqrl scene out there. Time for some sqrl burgers already. |

| Senior Member | Pretty much the same going here in NH. The little buggers are spending a lot of time on the ground doing their foraging thing. It's deer hunting season here at present, so I have been spending all of my hunting time since Nov 3rd sitting up in trees. It's been a good deer season so far, but I still have one tag left. Since the woods will be think with deer hunters for at least a couple of weeks more, I probably won't get back to squirreling until the end of Nov or early Dec. Squirrel season runs up until New Year's Eve. I am, however, eager to field a new squirrel getter I picked up earlier this month. It's a Remingtion SPR94 shotgun/rifle combo in .410/.22lr. The .22 is sighted in, but I am not completely happy with the pattern the .410 throws out with Full choke. Sometime this weekend I hope to get back out to the range to check out how it patterns in Modified or IC. Hopefully, the gun will pattern more to my liking with choke other than Full. And, once we get this deer hunting thing out of the way, I'll be back on the ground for some late season squirreling. msj

| Senior Member ![]() | Arkansas Modern Gun Deer Season is in full swing here...We only have a couple of weeks to enjoy squirrel season and then M.G.D.S opens. You can still hunt squirrels on up to the end of Febuary during the Deer seasons. You have to wear hunters orange if you squirrel hunt during Muzzeloader and Modern Gun seasons. That could be dangerous...A.H |

| Member | yes opening day here I slept through it. Sunny windy day figured deer will freak out and stay bedded. Lots of cars parked but no carcasses yet. Sometimes I show up with 12ga+slug, post for a while then switch to shot and go for squirrel or grouse to get moving a bit then another spot, rinky dink wood tree stand etc. |

| Senior Member | I got my Buck tag filled and decided to head to the woods for a Squirrel hunt this afternoon.I went to a spot where I had Deer hunted this fall that has 4 huge Red Oak trees standing in a line at the woods edge. The Deer and Squirrel were feeding heavily in this spot as witnessed by all the over turned leaves. The Oaks still had nuts on them but there were a lot of nuts laying on the ground.I set up my folding stool in the middle of the Oaks by a downed tree and leaned my .22 Savage Arms Mark II against a sapling.Maybe 5 minutes had passed when I noticed movement in one of the Oak tops.It was a Fox Squirrel and he was cutting on a acorn. The crosshairs steadied on his head and I touched off the shot. The 40gr. soft point hit with a loud thwack and I watched him tumble to the ground with a soft thud.Another Fox Squirrel decided to come down the side of another Oak and another head shot sent him tumbling to the ground also.Imediately a third Squirrel(another Fox) ran out on a limb of one of the Oaks and started barking. His barking ended when the 40 Gr.soft point found its mark just below his eye.I grabbed my stool, picked up my Squirrels, and headed for my Quad runner.Pre-Winter and Winter Squirrel hunting are one of my favorite times of the year to hunt Squirrel.Their hides this time of the year are gorgeous and they are fat from all the high protein foods they have consumed in preparation for the long cold Winter. If a hunter can find their feeding areas the hunting can be intense and multiple Squirrels can be taken from the same spot without having to move about in the woods.I love hunting these areas and the excitement they bring. |

| Registered User | Took a short walk away from work a week ago and found one grey that was stupid enough to stand still. My first kill with my Henry 22. Harder than anything to skin the little feller but still tasted good. Squirrels aren't very big in Arizona. Need 2 or 3 for a full meal. Still had fun and got paid for hunting. Not a bad day. |
