| Could an Ak Bullpup be built that is NY State legal?
For some reason, the idea of a bullpup-configured AK-47 appeals to me. If adaped to a red dot or scope sight, it might well be the ultimate survival rifle for a car grab & go kit. However, I have a problem. I have the misfortune to live in the Peoples Democratic Republic of New York, which retained a version of the Slick Willy Gun Ban. My gun guru says that the versions of the AK being made in bullpup configuration are not legal in New York. I've read the sticky on the 1994 Assault Weapons law, and I think the problem the state has with the bullpup AK is with the barrel (my guru wasn't sure; he just knew there was a problem with it). The ones being made come with barrels threaded for a flash hider or other aftermarket gimcrack, and under the law that's a no-no. Does someone manufacture an Ak-47 barrel that either has no threads or comes with a permanently attached flash hider, that I could buy and install instead of the threaded barrel? Or is there another combination of features that will get an AK-47 bullpup past the law in New York? I can live with the 10 round magazine restriction; Dad was Infantry and taught me that 1 round that hits the target is worth 100 that don't. (He held the "spray & pray" approach to combat shooting in deep contempt even though his weapon of choice in World War II was a Thompson. I got to overhear a number of conversations he had with the guys in the Fort Devens base hospital when we visited my cousin who was recuperating there during Vietnam concerning how the Jam-A-Matic was being used in the war, and how the troops were trained to use it. ) I don't need a bayonet or a grenade launcher. But I would like the bullpup configuration; the thing is, I'm not a gunsmith to build one from the ground up. Anyone have any ideas? |

I've tried to look around for you but I all the bullpup's I see don't state whether they have a threaded barrel or not. I guess you could buy a AK that is legal in NY then buy a bullpup stock or Kit. Not sure if that helps. good luck.

Well as far as the barrel goes, you could get a threaded one, and have someone weld a muzzle break on it. Once welded, it's considered to all be one barrel.

It should be legal as long as you have an unthreaded muzzle. Welding a non flash hider attachment would work, or just using an unthreaded muzzle, like a pre=expiration SAR-1 or WASR-10, or most MAK-90s and other Chinese AKs.
