What is a good battle rifle?

Can one be purshased for under $400. I am thinking bears, wolves, men armed with with aks. And i don't want something fully auto.

Define battle rifle

Do you mean an extended campaign in a hostile environment? Or do you mean a quality weapon and caliber for a situation in which you can provide
normal cleaning and maintenence at various intervals (a relatively safe area before patrolling or going to a front)?

I would say the first as long as you dont use extended magazines in a SKS that is not desighned to shoot them.

Check the various online distributors and vendors, print or write down the info, and any good FFL dealer can order the gun you want for a small transfer fee.
Do you have any gunshows in town or nearby - check there when they come. Purchase price may be higher, but you can save a bit on not paying shipping.

For under $400, the best thing you'll find is a cheap AK(at today's prices) or an SKS. I'd go with the SKS just because they're typically more accurate than an AK, so you hit range is a tad bit farther. It also uses 7.62x39 like the AK, so with most of the world using that round, you wouldn't have to worry about ammo. The SKS is also extremely easy to clean and doesn't need as much cleaning as a lot of weapons to make it function. Now if you want to up the price another $100, go AK. You can get a good one under $500.

I totally understand. I guess what I'm trying to impress is that they are not going to go down in price, and will be gone all together some day. personally if I really wanted one and was 45 buckes off my budget, I'd figure a way for the other 45 bucks.

That said. an SKS would fit the bill perfectly for your budget range for the type of weapon you need. You would have money left to get 2 or one gun and a bunch of ammo.

If you decide on an SKS, I'd avoid a Yugo unless you like carrying a couple of extra pounds of useless weight.

The SKS would make a great battle rifle. Carry stripper clips and use the original 10 round mag. If you need more than 10 rounds before reloading, you need to be running or hiding
