Considering someone home invading may have drugs or alcohol (or both) in their system I suggest a 20 gauge slug gun. Recoil is manageable, cycling time with a pump shotgun is fast, and knockdown power is certain.
I respect your opinion nathangdad, but must disagree with your conclusion on the 9 mils. I have seen what a 9mm hydra shock can do to a solid object thru both my carbine and my pistol. It is devastating when placed in a home defense situation. I have both 9 mil and .45 pistols and like them both, don't want to be hit by either one. In a combat/military situation I just soon have a M-16.
