Squirrel-to-nest population ratios

Anyone have any figures, any ideas at all, reqards guesstimated squirrel population numbers in relation to observable squirrel nests (dreys) in a given area?

(I know, what size area? you might ask. I don't know. Hoping someone can fill in that detail, too.)

I have never read or heard of a ratio regarding squirrel populations to squirrel nests.I have no scientific knowledge or figures that will back up anything I can say on this subject but I will go out on a limb and add my 2 cents.I do not think there are squirrels in every nest but instead believe there are many nests dis-regarded and abandoned.A couple reasons being fleas and available food sources.Perhaps there are other reasons but these 2 would seem to be high on the list.I have saw new nests show up(in numbers) on the edges of picked corn fields and heavy acorn mast areas of woods many times. They want to live near the food.I seek out these areas when doing a lot of my hunting.I look for the biggest nests near a food source and more often than not there will be a squirrel near this area.I also look for den trees(hollow trees with nests built inside)to give me an idea of squirrel populations. They are much harder to see sometimes but worth looking for. There are a lot of squirrels that live in den trees and not nests in my midwest hunting areas. If a hunter looks for both nests and dens and finds areas with heavy numbers of each, the squirrels will be there.Exactly what ratio of squirrels to visible nests, I don't have an educated clue.Does anyone else?

I've never heard of any formula but I can say in my 53 years of breathing I've never seen as many squirrels where I Deer hunt.
It most be an outstanding year for squirrels
