I am about to purchase my second gun. I had a bad experience with my first. I had a semi-auto .22 Jennings that jammed all the time. I was scared of it. (I hated it) I will be getting either another semi-auto .22 or a .22 revolver. I have looked at some other things. My hubby has a Ruger P95 9mm, I am considering the new Ruger SR9. I have also shot my mothers and my mother in laws 38 special. (Both Revolvers) I really liked them but I want something that I can shoot with out spending a small fortune in ammo. Any suggestions on a good .22 revolver or semi-auto?

A Jennings? Ouch. Get a ruger mark III or Ruger single six, they are both .22s. I have both and love them. Fun and cheap to shoot.

For a 22lr hand gun go with Ruger or Browning for a semi. For centerfire there are so many.

I agree, about the Ruger single six. I have shot both a Walther P.22 and a Single Six. The Walther is a good shoot after a trip back to the factory for a new extractor ( even though it is till a bit picky about what I shoot through it ). The wheel gun continues to be reliable and very "unpicky" in the type of bullets you put into it.

Ask yourself this question, though, which gun will get off 10 shots the quickest?

This is just about as reliable and rock solid as it gets. The only thing I would suggest is one of the better quality replacement trigger assemblys on the market. Keep it clean and lightly oiled and the Ruger .22 will live on past your lifespan.

The only thing is that Natosha wants one that she can carry also and although the Ruger .22 auto is perfect for target practice, it isn't exactly a carry type. She only wants one gun. How would I know all this? She is my daughter.

I am considering a .22 auto for target practice also but I want to get one that I can also carry when I am not in the S&W .38 Special mood.

Welcome, Natosha! You will get a lot of great advice here. I just recently purchased a Ruger P95 which I love...accurate, reliable, not "picky" about ammo. (Of course if your hubby has one, you already know this

). I've not got my hands on the new Ruger sr9 yet, but it's on my "wish list". If you choose that one you'll have to let me know how sweet she is!

Thanks for all the advice and welcomes. I am still not sure what I am going to do. Yes I really want only one gun. I did shoot a Ruger at the range yesterday and really liked it. But the one I shot would not be a good carry gun. I have looked at a Smith and Wesson .22 revolver and loved it. But the cost is about the same as the Ruger SR9. So hmmm... I still have a decision. hehehe.

IMHO, if you plan to carry this for protection, I personally wouldn't trust the stopping power of a .22. I'm sure that others would disagree with me, but I just wouldn't trust my life to any .22.

But that sr9 sure is pretty! Seems to be "fully loaded" too w/ lots of great features.

I am suprised that more women don't try a Glock 19 or 26. It is a 9mm that holds 15 rounds. It is well proven by a million Police. I was looking to get one when a nice used one came up locally in 40 cal.

Ive seen the new Ruger and it looks like a copy of the glock. That is a good thing. The older ones are kinda bulky. My spouse has a Taurus pt111 which was worked over by both taurus and a private gunsmith. It is something that is good now (Stock it was not that reliable nor accurate).

More people have been killed by 22 than by any other caliber. I read once about an olympic 22 shooter from south america. Two guys tried to assault him as he was going into his garage. They had to bring in body bags for both of them when he shot them with his 22, something about control and shot placement. If you have a 22 in hand it is way better than a 9 in your glove box. I have a browning buckmark 22 and it has excellent ergometrics and accuracy. If I had it in my hand and not something larger I am sure that would hurt the criminal.

go with the ruger and if you really get into it have a trigger job by a professional gunsmith.

Remember if you don't have a concealed carry permit and go to get one you'll be better off useing a semi-auto pistol because if you use a revolver to qualify your limited to only carrying a revolver, if you qualify with a semi-auto you can carry either one.
