I just grabbed the September 1980 issue of Guns and Ammo to look at and Remington has an ad in it about the New 7mm Express (now the 280). Heres what It says.

The 7mm Express Remington. It Bridges the gap between 270 & 30-06 and
outperforms both.

In velocity, energy and trajectory the new 7mm Express beats the popular 150 gr. 270 and 30-06. All the way out to 500 yards.
This new cartridge with it's .284 150 gr. Core-Lokt bullet gives superior ballistics performance thanks to a new powder, a greater case capacity.
Now you can have near magnum performance with out magnum recoil.
At a non magnum price.

The Remington 788 rifle must of came out in 1980 too because theres an ad about it here too.

Because of greater case capasity with the 280 is it fair to compare it to the 270 ?
With larger bullet size and capasity were seeing a much different cartridge here and I like it.
