The .270 is a fine cartridge for deer and hog hunting. But stay away from the 710, it is plagued with problems.

I've had my 710 (.270) now for 2 deer seasons and, for the price, you can't beat it. Paid $320 for it topped with a Nikon Monarch 3x9x50, bought it from a Pawn Broker friend. The synthetic stock's gray color was less desirable but has proven to be indestructable and quite comfortable to shoulder and fire. I have found it to be accurate and a great all around gun. Considering my investment, I can concentrate on hunting and not be so obsessive with protecting the finish on my weapon. So far I have not been "plagued" with those so called problems.

I must be "one" of the lucky ones because I bought my 710 in .270 cal the end of 2004. I haven't been plauged by the gun or scope. Shoots well and the inexpensive Bushnell made it through a very wet opening day a few years ago and has never lost it's zero. It seems the only 710's that are "plagued" with problems are the ones that are being shot on a daily basis which is not what a "budget" rifle was designed for. For an annual hunting rifle I believe it will last just fine.

so for the price is it a good deal?what do you think would be better .270 or the 30/06 and how much smaller is a .270 than a .308 i would really like a .308 .

A 150gr bullet in a .270 will penetrate deeper than a 150gr in a.30-06 because it is smaller diameter but doesnt disperse energy as good because the -06 is larger dia. This is using comperable frangibility bullets and same fps. sam.

ok i'm lookin for a bullet and a gun that i can target shoot with some great accuracy with but if ever needed i can drop a deer with very easy too. now keep in mind i have neck injury and i can't take alot of recoil.so is that .270 all that? so the 710 is out as for everyday shootin it sounds like it would wear out but what gun would do good then that is cheap?

The Savage or Stevens brand of rifles are excellent, and they are in the $250-350 range.

Tommy, in a lightweight gun, the .270 will thump just a tad less than a .30-06 with 150gr. bullets. 130's aren't as bad, and if they're still too stout, Rem. makes a reduced-recoil load with a 115 gr. bullet that they claim has 50 percent less recoil than a standard load.

For the price I think it's a good deal. I have the 710 in ..270 and I have a Mossberg 100 ATR in .308 cal. I shoot 130 gr from my .270 and 150-165 gr from my .308 and I can't "feel" the differance in recoil. If I could only own one gun with the possabillity of hunting any game out there I would probably opt for the 30-06 because it is offered in so many different grain factory loads. But apples to apples the 30-06 is going to have more recoil so keep that in mind. As mentioned they make low recoil shells, but you sacrafice some ballistics. As far as stopping a deer in it's tracks any caliber and a well placed shot will result in a deer going no farther than about 25-50 yards. Until last year all 5 or so Deer I killed were with a 30-30 and they were dead within 15-40 yards of impact. So unless you shoot a deer in the spine or use a .300 win. mag type caliber it is going to run a little, JMHO.Also as mentioned there are several "budget" guns out there that are of better quality than the 710. The Savage/Stevens are proven designs and Mossberg has the ATR and 4X4 rifle that are getting stellar reviews and can be had for about $250 without a scope. For comparison sake my Mossberg "feels" like a gun costing much more than my Remington even though tyhey were about the same. Accuracy wise you are splitting hairs because they are all accurate unless they were made with a bad barrel and these days that's pretty uncommon.

I love my Remington m700 but I, also, would go with the Savage/Stevens or the new 770 over the 710.
The .270 is one of the most widely used calibers in the north woods of my wilderness province of B.C., we use it for all species but wouldn't be my choice in our Grizzly bear areas. This is a very educational read MATCHING THE GUN TO THE GAME
Thanks

I have one more thing to add, Bushnell and Buasch & lomb are one name (Bushnell) now and they make excellent optics, mostly the Elite line but others as well. Check out this page Recommended Riflescopes
Thanks

I used to have a .270 Winchester M70, and now have an M1903 30-06. I notice no difference in recoil from the 150grain 30-06 rounds compared to the 130 grain .270 rounds, but the M1903 weighs a lot more than the M70.

If recoil is an issue, I wouldn't recommend either of these calibers. I have a pretty strong shoulder, and 15 rounds of both .270 and 30-06 make it sore.

I watched 710's over the years with the recall and all of the problems, Mgr @ Walmart told me in early Sept. that they were on sale. bought one, changed scope to 50mm and sanded down the inside of the chamber, put thin coat of Rem Oil. The bolt is smooth and it is a tack driver. 270 with 140 Gr Ballistic Tips, 3 shot groups less than 1" @ 100 yds.
