What to do with my Mauser?

I just recently joined and asked about my K98 I bought. With some advice I got a Go and No Go gauge to check out my K98 since it wasn't the original bolt. To my disappointment the bolt closed on the No Go gauge. Any advice what to do. Can it be repaired and does anyone know a good gunsmith around Phoenix Arizona that can do it? Any advice would be helpful. I bought the gun at an auction for $100 so it's not a big loss, but after I got it I was sure looking forward to shooting it.

You can either have it re-barreled , or Have YOUR barrel removed , the shoulder turned down, re-Fit, and the chamber reamed and headspaced properly by a Qualified Gunsmith...Cost generally is 150 to 250 dollars.

Oh, and you COULD have it rechambered to 8mm/06...

check the condition of the barrel. it really might be in your advantage to get a new one rather than have the expense of chamber reaming. as you get a no go I have doubts you have the original barrel anyway.

Okay, now I really need help. I took the bolt apart, and took the extractor off. Now I can't get the bolt back out. It looks like the pin holding the trigger in is either soldered or welded in. Was this common for the Russkies to do? It looks like I'll have to drill out the pin unless someone knows a trick to get my bolt out. Am I missing something obvious?

Do you have pics of what you're describing? The trigger pin should push right out unless someone "Bubba'ed" it. The bolt should drop out by pulling the bolt release on the left side of the receiver.

I have tried to attach a picture. Don't know if it worked or not. See the ring around my pin? I think I will try a bigger hammer. Isn't that what you are suppose to do?

By the way, closing on a no-go is not necessarily a sign of dangerously excessive headspace. If the bolt closes on a no-go, the next step is to check with a field guage. If the bolt will not close on a field guage, it is still safe to shoot.

Best take your bag of parts to a good gunsmith (good luck finding one) and have him check the rifle thoroughly.

The primary purpose of headspace guages is to cause anxiety.

Thanks samuel. It was quite what you said, but you got me in the right direction. It seems it was hanging up on the extractor collar ring. I had to put a pair of real thin long needle nose in the extractor slot and squeeze the ring together. I got it out. Thanks.

I tried the no go gauge again after I took the extractor off and it appears the bolt won't close all the way on the no go gauge. I guess I will take it to a gunsmith before I fire it and see what he says. I really appreciate all the advice you guys gave me during this ordeal. I flailed with this for about 5 hours.

I DID the same thing once, took off the extractor and left the ring on, and it got hung up. Take an ice pic or something slender and try to rotate the ears on the ring "UP" so they will pass through the bolt guide slot in the receiver when you pull it back.

Your pin appears to have been Peened like a rivet...there are several ways to get around this, one is by center punching it DEAD CENTER and drilling shallow with a small bit, and increasing size to the diameter of the pin, and the peened ring will separate, allowing the pin to be driven out...You need a drill press and Vise to do this. The other way is to CAREFULLY grind the peened head flush with the trigger, using a dremel tool and small rock grinder,until you can drive the pin out with a punch.

Presuming nothing is broke on it -There is No reason to take the trigger & trigger bar/sear off your rifle - ever!
And yes quite a few of us have done the extractor off insert bolt stupid move at one time or the other.
What are the markings on your rifle, you didn't say.
Your bolt body is off of a late war bcd and the trigger/sear is off of a very early 98k, possibly a S/147.

I kinda have the same question as azgunnut, what am i to do with it ? 100_0185.jpg It is a M1916 spanish mauser I believe, 7mm , I think its a Guardia Civil but there really isnt any markings on it.

I have a question and it is...What if someone bought this rifle and didn't know any better and shot it ? What would happen ? I've got a near perfect condition Mauser
98 in my gun cabinet that I had to replace the bolt.
I happen to know it needs to be head spaced and have put a cable lock through it where in case I die someone want shoot it I hope.
Can you put an empty fired case in it to check to see if it operates properly ?
And do like billy and tie to a tree ( I would duct tape) with a string tied to the trigger and fire it and check the empty case ?
