| Senior Member | Squirrel tracks in the snow
We have a few inches of snow in my area and I have been fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time hunting squirrels. The snow adds a whole new dimension to the hunting experience.Anybody else following the tracks?

Going primarily rabbit hunting today, but squirell is still in. We have an inch or two on the ground here too. I like it especially for the rabbits. At least gives up a clue if they are active in a particular area or not.

It's been a long tme. I ate a lot of those tree rats when I was in school. Put them in a roaster with a slice of bacon. Yum!

Well,a rain melted most of the snow in this area today but I was able to get out and find some good concentrations of Squirrel sign. The rut is starting and hopefully will cause an increase in the activity as well as sightings. Its a good time of the year to be in the Squirrel woods.Good luck to all who are still out there enjoying it.

I never in my life have seen as many squirrels where I Hunt as I have this year and due to it being Deer season I can't wait for it to be over where I can harvest several mess's of squirrels. I'm trying hard not to carry one of my 22's with me ( For Squirrels only) when I'm in one of our Deer stands Deer hunting. LOL...A.H |

Shootester,in most states you will need a small game license to hunt Squirrels but I am not 100% sure about all states. You may want to check the laws and guide lines of your state. I know what you are saying A.H., them Squirrels are tempting while Deer hunting. It seems they are every where when Deer hunting but more elusive when they are the targeted hunting species.Guess a guy could try and pull a head shot off(HA-HA just kidding)when he just can't stand it anymore.Good luck with your Deer hunting.Let us know how you are doing when you are able to get after them Bushy-tail again. |

| Winter Squirrels
Up here in NH we have a nice layer of snow on the ground which shows up squirrel tracks real well. And of course, when the little buggers are on the ground foraging, they show up so much better, too. Unfortunately, however, I'm going out of my mind watching the squirrel activity in my own back yard while having to sit up in my house nursing a busted shoulder - a shoulder I busted up when I took a header down a steep hill while hunting the very animals of which we speak! I am not a happy camper. I can barely lift my arm, never-mind a rifle. Our season here runs until New Year's Day, and whereas I seem to be getting better day-by-day, I'm hoping I might be able to get a day or two of hunting in at least the last days of the season. The wife, of course, will give me a serious ration of crap about that; and I'm sure my doctor might not be too enthusiastic about my hunting before surgery takes place either. But what the heck? If I feel better and can manage my rifle - what's one or two little walks in the woods? I can't believe I have to just sit here! Hey! What's that?! Do I hear squirrel laughter?!!! msj

I hate to hear of your mis-fortune NHmsj.I bet you are really hateing it and ready to get back in to the Squirrel woods.Hoping your surgery goes well. The Indiana Squirrel season runs from August 15th to January 31st.The breeding activity has started heating up but colder temperatures has put somewhat of a damper on it.Can't wait till the first warm sun-shiney day and the icrease in activity it will bring.Keep us posted on your hunting and how your back is doing.Good luck to you on both.

Its a good way to find concentrations of squirrel sign in a woods.Heavy traffic areas are always a good bet and are usually found near or around leaf nests or denning areas, that are near food sources. Its like deer hunting or any other type of hunting, heavy sign concentrations are good areas to hunt.
