| 10/22 Vs 17HMR Alright I've been lookin around at aftermarket parts for my 10/22 Ruger and theres a few appealing things I'd like. My question is accuracy wise which is better? A Savage93 17HMR or a Ruger 10/22? Lately I haven't been too happy with the accuracy on my ruger. I'm big on accuracy I love one shot kills. My other plinking/small game gun I use is a RWS model 48 pellet gun and it shoots pretty accurate in my opinion, obviously not a match pellet gun but gets the job done with power. Anyway would I be wasting my time by putting money towards the 10/22 like a new trigger/hammer/sear kit, barrel, stock etc... just to still have not so good accuracy? ![]() P.S. - my first post lol. |

| Senior Member | Welcome to the board Lepa4013.The Savage 93 in .17HMR would be my choice for accuracy, simply because it shoots faster, has a flatter trajectory, and can be shot accurately farther. However it is a very hyper round for small game. |

| The Savage would definitely out-shot a factory 10/22. If you put on a new trigger, barrel and stock the 10/22 would hang pretty close out to between 50 - 100 yards (depending upon how good a barrel you put on the 10/22). Past 100 yards - it is all 17HMR. The 17 HMR is based off a 22 magnum. So, it is really not a fair contest. You are comparing apples and oranges. Be sure to price the difference in cost of ammo. To me the 17HMR is out of my price range as a fun little plinker. I would suggest both, the 10/22 is a great little fun plinker and close-up critter getter. The 17HMR would be fun for extended rimfire range (100 yards +). Welcome to the site! |

| Senior Member | specialist Lepa4013: Sir; the 10-22 has a tremendous following. Not because it inaccurate. Improving any of the trigger groups will help. My opinion: RimFireCentral is all about rimfires. The 10-22 has a special section. Spending any time at RFC and you'll see. Read and ask; my experiences with RFC has been positive. Now the .17hmr: outstanding flat shooting; fast bullet. Historically out of the box Marlin, Savage, Ruger are top shelf. Not uncommon, less than an inch @100yds. Triggers will need addressing. Sir; I shoot Single Action, I want a Single Six .17hmr. At RFC I have picked up some great ideas. G&G folks are great knowledgeable folks, sir; I have extensive knowledge and experiences; in this particular case I defer. They are specialist. Stay with Gunandgame: Share your experiences. For refined tuning; there is another called the 'Bullseye'. @ GunTalkOnline Ruger master with rimfires. Depends on your particular direction.

| Thanks for all the replies guys, I just haven't been very happy with my ruger 10/22 I've had it for about 3 years and kept it extremely clean and now its starting to misfire. Theres been a couple charts I was looking at and the ruger is all over the place while the 17 stays pretty flat. So right now I'm looking at $30+ just to get my 10/22 to fire again and then I'd like to pick up a new stock and barrel for it. The 93R17 -F retails right around $210-230 and a nice bull barrel for a 10/22 usually runs 120+ |

| Senior Member | .17 Mach 2 Lepa4013 have you cosidered the .17 Mach 2? It is a .22 caliber stinger case necked down to shoot a .17 caliber 17 grain boat-tail bullet. It is much less destructive than the .17 HMR but out to 100yards allmost equal in trajectory. |

| Again, if it is a money thing. You need to look at the price of 17HMR and to a lesser degree 17 mach 2 ammo. You are looking at ~$12 a box for 17 HMR verses ~$2 or less for .22lr. I guess it all depends on your budget and how much you plan to shoot. I sold my 17HMR mainly for this reason.

| Money on ammo isn't really a concern. I just started researching 17's tonight after doing a lot of price checking on 10/22 aftermarket stuff, so I haven't looked into mach 2's yet. |

If you want pure accuracy get a bolt. If you want a fun project to customize in a semiauto- get a 10/22.

| I don't know what went wrong but after 3 years of shooting its been doing a lot of misfires and I recently clipped a couple rings on the spring and liked the pull a lot better. So what would I have to do to get it firing again? So far I think I'm going to end up with a nice savage not sure which model I want yet but the BTVS is looking nice. I was looking at the Tapco M4 stock for my 10/22 before it started misfiring on me cause its adjustable and light weight with a lot of good reviews to make it a fun plinker I just want a gun with a lil bit more accuracy for hunting and target shooting to match my model 48 pellet gun. |

| Senior Member | Lepa, You'll love the .17HMR. I sure have a lot of fun with it. Far more accurate than a .22, no comparison at all in my opinion. I have a 10/22 and a pair of .17's. One is a Savage and the other a Ruger M77. The Ruger out shoots the Savage every time. The Ruger is built much better. I recommend the BSA Sweet Seventeen scope. It's calibrated specifically for the .17 round, and is very accurate in it's adjustments. Good luck, and welcome aboard!

Sounds like your firing pin is striking the rim of the bullet too slow. Like it's gummed up or burred.

| The spring that gets replaced when u buy a trigger kit that lightens the pull, I've tried a couple different solvents and lubricants in hopes of getting it cleaned out. Oh and if anyone was wondering yes it was misfiring before i clipped the spring i was just having fun to see if it actually lightened the pull or not which it did. |
