CZ 70's?

Anyone have any personal experience with the CZ 70 handgun? I haven't shot one, but I've read good things about their reliability and accuracy.

I'm looking at one on consignment at a local gun shop for $240.00, that's pretty much spotless. It includes the usual holster and two magazines, plus a magazine pouch, soft carry case and 100 rounds of fmj ammo.

Seems like a reasonable price. The best I found online was $169.95 plus shipping from Florida Gun, for one with a holster and two mags, and another fifteen bucks for hand-picking.

Interestingly enough, one of the differences between the CZ 50 and the CZ 70 is supposed to be the hand grips being dimpled instead of lined, but this one has the lined grips. Everything else marks it as a 70 though, including the hammer style and the non-glare engraving on top of the slide.

For such a small gun it's surprisingly solid-feeling, fits my hand reasonably well, and points for me either left or right-handed. And it's flat enough to make a good CCW, if I ever make it across the river to a state where I can get a permit without being rich or a celebrity...

AH the cz50 is the one in the middle and is basicly the same as the 70, they are chambered in .32 auto, for size comparison the cz 52 is on the left and the cz 82 on the right.

Here's a pic of a CZ 50, A.H.

The CZ 70 is just a slightly updated version of it with clunkier-looking grips, and a hammer more like a Tokarev. Since the one I'm looking at has the old-style grips, this picture looks a lot like it.

The caliber is 7.65x17 (.32 acp). They're single/double action guns, with a de-cock setting on the safety lever and nine-round magazines (I think).

A Wikipedia article claims, "This pistol is capable of very good accuracy. Using the S&B 73grs factory ammo, skilled shooters can put five rounds inside a 50mm circle at 25 meters." That's basically five-shot groups inside a two-inch circle at twenty five yards...

I know all the arguments for larger calibers, but the small ones make sense sometimes too.

I just sold a CZ50 (import marked incorrectly as a CZ70) on Gunbroker.com for $179 with 3 mags and a gun bag.

GunBroker.com guns: CZ50/70 .32ACP Complete Package - 3 mags & bag (item: 85842887 ends: Dec-03-07 0612 PM)

$240 seems high to me. When you can find them around here, they go for about $150-$175, with one mag.

I missed the extra mags, gun bag and ammo the first time I read your post. That makes it a better deal, still seems high to me for a CZ50/70.

Jay, thanks for the input. But are you sure yours was mismarked? As far as I've been able to find out, all CZ 70's are marked as CZ 50's from the factory, because they're just the 1970 model of a 50, with some minor modifications.

According to a Wikipedia article, those mods include:

* New grip shape with a larger recess for the web between thumb and finger.
* New grip pattern using a grid of dimples instead of grooves.
* Top of the slide is engraved with a fine wave pattern to reduce glare.
* Serial number is stamped on the slide under the ejection port instead of below and behind it.
* Slide serrations are wider and there are more of them.
* Take down lever has a cross-hatched instead of grooved surface.
* Larger, knurled hammer with a hole in it.
* Smaller magazine release.
* Magazines have new base with a more angular and less curved shape.

The one I was looking at was also factory-marked as a 50 but import-marked as a 70. And I didn't know enough at the time to check all the details, but it has the larger hammer with a hole, the anti-glare engraving, the cross-hatched take-down lever, the small mag release and the angular mag base. But it has the CZ 50 lined grips, instead of the dimpled, squared-off ones.

I think that by the time I add in the extras, and figure no shipping costs, it isn't really that far out of the range you're quoting. And don't forget I live in California, where handgun prices are generally ridiculous. Wish I could get North Carolina prices in Southern California sometimes, but keep California wages...

One last thing: the guy the store owner is selling it for works there, although he was off today. So I sure as heck know where to go if I have a problem with it...

Smile Money talks...especially cash

Well, I'm the proud owner of a CZ-70. I showed the seller two hundred in cash this afternoon, and he took it.

To recap: it came with two magazines; an open-top holster in thin, pebbled black leather with a top strap and belt slots; a matching pouch for the second mag; a zip-up soft case; and 100 rounds of fmj ammo marked R P 32 AUTO.

Judging by the condition of the holster, someone carried this gun for a long time. After I paid him, the guy showed me some little markings on the slide, and told me they meant it was government issue to someone in Czechoslovakia's Ministry of the Interior, which he said was sort of like our FBI. He also claimed it was issued in 1969, even though it's a CZ 70 model, which might explain why it has the old-style grips.

When I get the gun home (California's !@#$%^ 10-day waiting period), I'll look it over, do some online investigations of my own, and post some pics.

And a range report farther down the line, of course.

Interestingly, the seller (who's an ex-Marine) told me it's the most accurate pistol he's ever shot. He claims he could shoot two-inch groups all day long with it at 25 yards, and that it ate any brand of ammo he fed it without even burping. He said it after he had my money, which makes it a little more believable than it might have been otherwise...

When I asked him why he sold it, he said it just doesn't get used any more because he, his wife and ten-year-old son are all shooting 9mm now.

I wish you had let me know, since you are here in NC. I would have saved you the gunbroker.com fees.

On my way to pick up the new toy. I can't actually get it until 1:23 PM, because when California says, "ten days," they mean no less than 240 hours, period.

Oh well, at least it isn't Big 5 Sporting Goods. They don't trust their clerks to tell time, so they simply tack an extra day on to be sure. At least I assume that's the reason...

I took my CZ 70 for a test drive in the desert the other day, along with my new 91/59 Mosin. I've been turning my motor home upside down looking for my camera's transfer cable so I could upload some pic's, but can't find it. And my laptop doesn't have an SD card reader.

Oh well, the gun's in very nice shape; as clean and pretty as I remembered it being. I fired fifty rounds, starting at 10 yards and moving back to 25, and managed to wipe out the survivors of the beer can herd I had thinned with the 91/59.

I don't have a lot of practice with pistols yet; the Tokarev I bought earlier this year was the first I've ever owned, except for a revolver thirty years ago. But I managed to hit the cans anyway....

I had one failure to eject, so I dropped the magazine and racked the slide, and it popped out. Don't really know why it happened; I hope it doesn't make a habit of it. Probably not, because it was in the middle of the fifty I fired. Aside from that, no problems whatsoever with it.

The front sight has a white dot on it. I think I'll replace it with a fluorescent one, and add a pair to the rear sight too. My 58-year-old eyes need all the help they can get.

I would have if I'd known there would be interest... the guy who bought it from me on Gunbroker sent me an email when he received it and he was delighted with the condition of it... it's a good shooter, too. I put 250 rounds thru it with no problems. All FMJ, never tried any HP in it. Figured that with .32ACP I should stick with FMJ to get any kind of penetration.

Let me know sometime when you are going to be out toward Hillsborough or Burlington on the weekend when the weather is nice, and maybe we can hit the outdoor range together?

Congrats T2K on a good purchase. There wasn't any Condors feeding on your projectiles in laying in the hills was there? NRA' America's First Freedom did an article on California's new gun laws. Hope you have many years shooting up the hills. That actually sounds like fun. Pick a spot 800 yards out and see where the dust flies.
Thanks for the range results. Bet that inspires a few purchases. Hmm? I've got a few hundred left over.

No condors in the hills where I was shooting, FMJ. Not even the buzzard hang out there much. But I picked up the beer-can corpses anyway, just to make sure one didn't happen to come along and eat them...

Merry Christmas.

I bought two CZ 70s in Germany (military rod and gun club) back in 1988 for $75 each (one for me and one for my Dad). Came with box, cleaning supplies and 2 mags. I was invited to shoot at a German base and brought one of the 70s along. The Germans were very amused that I had brought such a wimpy gun, until I scored better than them with it on their own range. They are very accurate and definitely small enough for concealed carry. Both were stolen before I could get them back to the states (taken right out of my pack-out shipment, somewhere along the way, when I transfered back to the states). If guns were in household effects shipments, they had to be in box #1 and it had to be labeled as containing firearms. That stupid policy cost the government a lot of money (compensation for thefts) and was eventually stopped.

Sounds like one of those policies that appear to have been drafted by drunken lemurs, noelf2. Why didn't they save everyone time and trouble and slap a "dear thieves, the guns you're looking for are in this box" label on it, then hand you a check for them before you left for home?
