Silencers for a .22

Subsonic is quieter and also more fun to shoot longer range u pull the trigger then hear the impact.

The sound barrier is broken at Approximately 1100 FPS, so even with a silencer, there will be a loud crack if the bullet exits the muzzle at that speed...Subsonic bullets solve this problem with a good designed silencer. Sticking a damn potato on the end of the barrel is a good way to bulge or blow up a barrel....

Subsonic ammo is quieter, but not "silenced". Theoretically, one way to silence a small caliber rifle is: Buy one of those wire cricket cages with the small square holes. Cut a piece about 8" wide and 12" or so long and roll it up. Insert it into a PVC pipe 10-12" long(thin walled 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" in diameter) and let it go. It should unroll enough inside the pipe to give adequate clearance for the bullet. Put duct tape over one end, and push the wire all the way to that end. That will give you 2-4" for the gas to come out the barrel, expand, and then hit the wire and stop. You could probably find some pvc pipe small enough to fit on your barrel. If not, carefully wrapping your barrel in heavy duty duct tape until a small PVC pipe will fit snugly would probably work. a PVC adapter would work to connect the two different sized PVC pipes. Cutting a slit in the small PVC pipe so that it will slip beyond your front sight will allow you to put a pipe clamp behind your front sight to hold it on. Using a small dowel inserted a few inches into your barrel would keep the silencer straight to ensure the bullet doesn't hit anything would work nicely.

That's about the best I can think of based off what would silence a .22 and supplies that would be readily available in a situation that would require a person to survive in such a manner indicated. Personally, I don't see the point in doing that in current times. It would add many inches to the end of your rifle and make it very inconvenient to carry around, not to mention fines and jail time when you're caught with it. For me it's no where near worth it. To quiet a .22 properly, you also have to use reduced power subsonic ammo and limit range. In a survival situation, I think it would hinder more than help. In these times, it serves no purpose at all.

F.Y.I., silencers aren't illegal.
All you need is a squeaky clean record and enough patience for the paperwork.

If you want to buy a silencer, go to Impact Guns Online Store
Search their manufacturer list until you find a brand that makes them.

I screwed a 2 liter plastic soda bottle on my Mac 10, got off 3 shots before it blew off the bottom of the bottle. it made .45 acp sound like my pneumatic staple gun. I shot another .45 Mac with a factory suppressor and all you could hear was the gun's cycling noises.

so your going to drop your gun and pull out a pocket knife in a survival situation? i think killing rabbits or squirrels would be hard with just a knife...but thats just me

If you have a machine shop and a lot of patience and some competence with a metal lathe and a turret lathe, you can build your own. Tom Clancy of all people gives a detailed how-to in his book, Without Remorse. In sum, it involves putting graduated nesting metal "flower pots," six or eight of them, into an outer cylinder. One end is threaded to screw onto the muzzle, the other has a screw cap on it with a hole in the center 2/100ths larger than the diameter of the bullet. When used with subsonic ammo, this can-type silencer allegedly quiets the gun down to the point you can hear the firing pin strike the primer. I'd suggest using it with a scope, though, because you'll likely have to remove the front sight to get the silencer to fit onto the rifle.

Personally if I was in a survival situation and was worried about noise I would probably opt for a bow and arrow or crossbow maybe even a blowgun.

Well, it depends. The Colibri ammo is damned near silent in a single shot or bolt action, certainly as quiet as I need it to be. On the other hand, if the person who started the thread intends to take out sentries, a stilleto (long and thing, right?) might be a better choice. I wouldn't trust a subsonic .22 to reliably penetrate heavy clothing. Rye Man's idea was about the best one yet for silent weapons.

Heavy clothing in a tactical (survival?) environment is not the same thing as heavy clothing for squirrel hunters, is it? Take a look at soldiers and paramilitary types and tell me your .22 could reliably make it's way through all of their clothing and equipment. An uncle of mine wearing a cotton shirt and lightweight jacket was gut shot with a .22lr. He said it felt like a "good solid punch." Add a flack jacket and a boatload of miscellaneous gear and the awesome killing power of your .22 becomes somewhat less than impressive.

Sure it did but "reliably" generally implies "with terminal effect." He drove himself to the hospital and recovered without any disability, as far as I know.
So, to clarify what I said earlier; In my opinion, the subsonic .22 is not a dependable cartridge for survival or defensive use (I can NOT be the first person who ever said that!).
Dan22 never specified his objective. For squirrels it's perfect. But if one day the S actually has HTF and your survivalist neighbor suspects or catches you potting "his" squirrels, or Big Brother and his SS-clones set up shop in your little corner of the world, you may find your bolt-action rimfire with oil filter suppressor to be less than adequate.

In that case, you use headshots. My .22 is sighted for 50 yards, but I'm 90% certain I could get a head shot at 100 yards. Get a head shot and you don't need to worry about clothes.
