How Reliable?

Okay so I am thinking about getting a Supermatch M1A, I know they are accurate, but how reliable are they, do they need a little more maintanance than AK47s or not? Any first hand experiences?

Thanks

You won't shoot them the same way. Two different animals there. The M1A likes to be clean, though it is made to fire under adverse conditions.Tolerences are close, so you want to give it a little more care. AK's may be more reliable dirt wise, but an AK isn't a 600 yd target gun either.

"...made to fire under adverse conditions..." The Standard is sort of made to fire under adverse conditions. A Supermatch is a target rifle made for range conditions. Mind you, range conditions casn be adverse too, but most heat and dust. Use good ammo, keep it clean and properly lubed and you'll be fine.
"...a little more maintenance than AK47s..." Yep. The AK was designed to be issued to illiterate conscripts who could use it with little training. They'll keep going under the worst of conditions. Real ones anyway. Mind you, comparing an M1A Supermatch to an AK is like comparing a '68 Beetle to a Mercedes. Ok, it's an apples and oranges thing.

A slingshot needs more maintenance that an AK^) Even in supermatch, a M1A is still a battle rifle. What's done to make it a match grade rifle should not effect reliability. About the only thing I can think of is the op-rod spring guide in match grade may pack full of crud sooner than a usgi guide.

cleaning the national match m1a

I purchased the above mentioned rifle last summer and haven't given it a good cleaning. was told that due to the glass bedding you shouldnt remove the receiver from the stock. and should be taken to a gun smith to complete this task? i do clean the inside of the chamber and bolt face tho??? I have put approximately 80 rounds through the rifle and have also swabbed the barrel out.

Even without removing from the stock you can still do a pretty thorough clean. Barrel, chamber, bolt face, gas plug and gas cylinder. You can even pull the trigger mechanism, although some will say don't.

with glass bedded rifle's, you dont need to see a gunsmith to take it apart, however you should not seperate the rifle from the stock except for the once in a blue moon total cleaning. the more times you take it apart, the sooner it will have to be re-bedded.
